BASIC ENGLISH 102
COURSE MEMO
Welcome to Basic English 102 (TİŞ/GSİ 102). This course memo is prepared to
inform and guide students about the course they will follow. This course is offered to students
of Faculty of Management studying Business Administration, Political Science, and Public
Management in the Turkish language and students of Faculty of Fine Arts.
Aims
The general aim is to help students gain Basic English language skills in order to
communicate in level A1 as stated in Common European Framework of Reference.
It provides students with the general English language skills required to engage
effectively in routine forms of social interaction.
It also includes thorough and comprehensive study on grammar, vocabulary,
pronunciation and the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
TİŞ/GSİ 102 also aims to motivate learners by basing the content around up-to-date
topics of international interest.
Course Content
During the course, students are expected to develop vocabulary, structure and basic
communicative skills in everyday situations. The content of the course is given below:
 Jobs and free time activities
 Colors
 Physical appearance
 Likes & dislikes
 Prices
 The weather
 Food
 Technology
 Months & ordinal numbers
 Hobbies
 Households
Students are encouraged to learn more about the world and other cultures through the
medium of English and personalization is emphasized.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

Talk about free time activities and shopping,

Ask and answer about the abilities,

Give information about jobs,

Talk about colors and clothes,

Talk about the weather, holiday plans and food,

Talk about past activities,

Ask and tell the dates,

Complete dialogues and texts,

Write mini texts on different topics,

Identify the main idea of the listening texts,

Practice pronunciation and grammar by listening,

Listen and follow the instructions,

Do and submit the online assignments by using the technology.
Specific Course Activities
Upon the completion of the course TİŞ/GSİ 102, the students will specifically have;
 Improved their reading skills through various texts,
 Developed their pronunciation through listening,
 Improved their listening and speaking skills through short texts and dialogues,
 Practiced the use of language and lexis through oral activities like asking questions
and giving information about a specific topic,
 Written short texts on various topics,
 Developed their listening skills through task-based activities like filling in forms, and
dialogue completion,
 Become independent learners through online assignments and exercises,
 Become aware of the importance of taking an active role in the learning process.
Course Book
During this course, the following course book will be used:
“New Framework (Starter) by Ben Goldstein (Richmond)”
Students are required to purchase the original of this material. The original copy of the
course book will give them an access. They need this code number in order to do the activities
on the Internet as performance on doing these activities will be checked by the instructor and
students will get a grade for their IT performance.

Grading Scale
The following letter grade system will be employed for this course. You should not
expect a ‘Curve’ to be employed. DFL reserves the right to announce a Catalog or Curve.

Expectations from Students
The following classroom behavior is expected from all students:
1. Attendance is required for this course. There are 4 hours per week. The students who
exceed 18 hours attendance limit will not be allowed to take the final exam, regardless
of the reason for absenteeism.
2. Attendance is taken at the end of each class hour. You are required to keep track of
your own attendance. The instructor is not responsible for supplying regular
attendance figures to you.
3. In case of clashing hours, the administration in DFL requires a letter issued by the
head of the respective department to certify this matter. Also, the students with late
registration in the courses must provide the unit with approval from the student's
affairs office.
4. Medical reports are only accepted to have a chance to take the exams you miss and
only if the reports are submitted in due course your department and with proper
attribution to the regulations of the university. Medical reports will not be counted as
an excuse for absenteeism, unless otherwise stated by the university management.
5. The students must attend and be prepared to become an active and successful
participant of the course. To do this:
a) Students have to come to class prepared with the relevant course material.
(Notebook, pen, course book, reading material, etc...)
b) Students should adhere to the deadlines of assignments and tasks.
c) Students should participate in classroom discussions, and thus create a positive
learning environment.
d) Students are not allowed to activate mobile phones during class.
6. Students have to be punctual to all lessons.
7. Plagiarism is using another person's ideas, words, and style without citing its source.
This is stealing and will not be tolerated. A plagiarized work will receive a failing
grade.
