Job Description

SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Reports To: Behavior Education Coordinator Exemption Status: Exempt

PRE-REQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Specialist Instruction Credential, Mild/Moderate and/or Moderate/Severe. Must become certified in Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-Act) and successfully complete Specialized Classroom

Management (SCM) within 90 days of employment.

WORK HOURS: Monday-Friday

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Special Education Teacher’s instructional duties include, but are not limited to: writing IEPs (Individual

Education Plan) and ITPs (Individual Transition Plan); assist in the development of BSPs, developing academic and behavioral programs; delivering instruction in the domains of community, vocational, leisure, domestic, academic, independent living skills and social skills; reporting student progress; developing classroom schedules; maintaining student data systems; and creating and facilitating student transition plans. Instruction will emphasize acquisition of functional and academic skills in the least restrictive manner and setting as specified in the IEP.

Responsible for supervision and behavioral management of staff and students.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

Provide quality instruction to students in a self-contained classroom along an academic or functional skills classroom track. Provide multiple learning opportunities, independent skills, communication and socialization.

Develop Individual Education Plan (IEP) reports, goals and objectives; attend IEP meetings; establish, maintain and work toward student goals as outlined in the IEP.

Individualize curriculum to meet student’s specific needs and/or learning styles.

Maintain a highly structured classroom and appropriate level of student supervision at all times.

Administer standardized and non-standardized tests; develop curriculum and lesson plans in accordance with state guidelines.

Prepare lesson plans, progress reports, report cards and incident reports in a timely manner.

Observe and record academic and behavioral student progress daily.

Develop student’s behavior management skills and implement Specialized Classroom Management

(SCM).

Identify and recommend students for WorkAbility and assist in supervision of on-campus classroom job assignments.

Ensure classroom staff attend to the basic physical needs of students, including feeding, toileting and diapering, and ensuring students receive required medications.

Maintain a positive and professional demeanor, communicate effectively and interface with multidisciplinary team including parents, caregivers, social services, district personnel and other outside support agencies.

Follow guidelines of Professional Assault Crisis Training (Pro-ACT) and Specialized Classroom

Management (SCM).

Attend in-service trainings and all other required meetings.

Provide classroom orientation or training for classroom staff.

Complete additional assignments as specified by supervisor.

Adhere to all policies and procedures found in the Bright Futures Academy Employee Handbook.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage and supervise Teaching Assistants and Aides in their daily duties in and out of the classroom.

Provide constructive feedback and initiate corrective actions when needed with the assistance of the campus Principal and Human Resources.

Provide coaching, feedback and performance management to classroom staff.

Monitor rest and meal breaks ensuring compliance.

Ensures subordinates follow company policies and procedures.

Effectively motivates subordinates to attain organizational goals and objectives.

Keep employees challenged through job enrichment.

Promotes a performance oriented environment.

Supervises fairly and consistently with policies and procedures.

Conducts daily/weekly staff meetings.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employees may be exposed students who may ask to inappropriate questions, display socially unacceptable personal behaviors; insult your physical appearance, age, sex and race, use profanity, sexually explicit phrases; exhibit defiance, dishonesty, threats, accusations and theft, assaultive behaviors and selfdestructive behaviors.

Employees may also be exposed to students’ bodily fluids, including feces, urine, vomit, etc. Some students may need assistance with toileting, diaper changing, eating, and other personal hygiene functions, which may increase the exposure to bodily fluids.
