Specialist work based training placement in non-invasive archaeological techniques

Location: Placement to be based in Swindon for 6 months and then Cambridge for 6 months

The opportunity: This placement provides a rare opportunity to receive structured work based training in the specialist
area of non-intrusive archaeological investigation from highly qualified experts. The placement is hosted by Historic
England in Swindon and Cambridge, and is managed by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. This placement and
others like it have been established to address particular areas of skills shortage in the heritage sector, so career
prospects for placement holders are excellent. This placement programme is extremely well regarded within the sector
for the quality of the training it provides and for the success of former placement holders.
About us: Historic England is the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. The Chartered Institute for
Archaeologists is the UK’s leading professional body for archaeologists and also has members who specialise in other
areas of historic environment work.
About the placement: This is a twelve month placement starting 2 May 2016. The placement offers the opportunity to
develop skills in the recognition, interpretation, and analysis of archaeological monuments and landscapes using a
variety of non-invasive techniques. This includes the interpretation of aerial photographs and other forms of airborne
remote sensing data, as well as analytical field survey and some geophysical survey. The work involves the
interpretation of sites and landscapes within a date range from the Neolithic period to the twentieth century. .
About you: This placement is for you if you have some experience of archaeological assessment through study, work
experience or both, but have not had the formal opportunity to develop those skills to a professional standard.
The benefits: You will be paid GBP £17,299 p.a. An employers` pension contribution of 6% of salary will also be made to
your pension scheme. You will receive 25 days of paid leave p.a. You will be employed by the Chartered Institute for
Archaeologists and seconded to Historic England for the duration of the placement.
