To assist with the smooth operation of the undergraduate teaching laboratory (29:4005) and associated facilities (29:4009, 4015 and 3012) in Chemistry under the guidance of the senior technician and laboratory manager.
Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities
1.
Maintain the clean and tidy appearance of the laboratory (29:4005) and associated instrument room (29:4009) – including twice weekly bench and fume cupboard cleaning and bin emptying.
2.
Clean laboratory glassware daily during teaching courses.
3.
Assist other laboratory staff in setting up apparatus and experiments.

4.
Maintain tidy appearance of associated Computer Rooms (29:4015 and 3012) and check operation of workstations (reporting issues to ServiceLine) – performed weekly.

Restock laboratory consumables daily from Chemistry Store and from cardice freezer; return solvent wastes to Store.

Following Agresso training, ordering of consumables and apparatus. 2%

Monitor and restock (i.e. photocopying and binding) paperwork associated with lab courses (e.g. practical manuals).

Following relevant training, limited demonstration of equipment/procedures to students. 6%

Following relevant training, electrical safety testing of laboratory equipment. 6%

Undertake above duties similarly for outreach and other out-of-term activities.

Interaction with senior laboratory technicians and laboratory managers.
Interactions with Chemistry Store staff for supply of chemicals and solvent disposals.
Interaction with technical staff in Mechanical Workshop and Glassblowing Workshop.
Interaction with Academic Staff running courses in Teaching Laboratory.
Interaction with Undergraduates participating in courses in the Teaching Laboratory.
Interaction with the public on Outreach activities and Open Days
Special requirements
Part-time position: Mornings & Wednesday afternoon – or as required to
accommodate teaching
Handling chemicals: No allergy and no adverse reactions to chemicals
Working in a laboratory: Must adhere to GLP including laboratory dress code and safety
Ability to lift weights up to 10 kg (e.g. “Winchesters” of
chlorinated solvents) and move gas cylinders.
A Teaching Environment: Annual leave to be taken outside term time and essential laboratory work time.
