Job description & person specification Last updated: September 2015 JOB DESCRIPTION Post title: Temporary Teaching Fellow in Chemistry (9 months) Post number: Academic Unit/Service: Chemistry Career pathway: ERE *ERE category: Teaching focused Posts responsible to: Director of Programmes, Head of Education Posts responsible for: None, although the role involves working with postgraduate and postdoctoral demonstrators in teaching sessions Post base: Office-based and Non Office-based Level: 4 Job purpose To deliver teaching in chemistry to Year 1 and Year 2 undergraduate students, and potentially on our Science Foundation Year programme. This will involve contributing to the design and content of taught programmes and to the development and implementation of new approaches to the delivery of assessment and feedback to ensure a high quality learning experience for students. Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities % Time 1. To deliver practical teaching in the laboratory as part of a team with the laboratory managers. This will involve introducing experiments, direct teaching of students and hands-on demonstrating during lab sessions. This work will also involve the management of the work of a team of postgraduate demonstrators during lab sessions. 40% 2. To assess students’ performance during lab sessions, their laboratory notebooks and written reports submitted afterwards. The post-holder will provide feedback for students on their practical work which will allow them to improve their skills and their performance in the laboratory. The post-holder will be expected to work with colleagues to devise approaches to enhance the provision of feedback to students based on their laboratory work. 25% 3. To deliver teaching in workshop and tutorial sessions throughout the academic year. It is envisaged that the post-holder will also take a small number of lectures during the year. 20% Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities % Time These activities will include the design and implementation of teaching resources in collaboration with colleagues in the teaching team. 4. To provide additional support to the teaching team in chemistry in the areas of assessment 15% and feedback e.g. through setting and marking examinations and providing pastoral support to students where required. 5.
