The Giver Essay

Using one of the prompts, write a persuasive essay using evidence from both “The Giver” and your own life to support your argument. Due Friday March 7, 2014

Requirements:

1) Choose a prompt and create a concept map outlining your thoughts and argument for the essay. This must include your three supporting arguments. Use the concept map guide to assist in this part.

2) Using your concept map, complete the provided outline and then write your rough copy of the essay by hand. Make sure this is done as neatly as possible so that you and others can edit the writing.

Edit another student’s rough copy. Make sure I know who you are proofreading for and show me the edit remarks.

4) Write a persuasive essay using one of the writing prompts provided. You must have a total of five paragraphs with a minimum of 500 words double spaced using Times New

Roman size 12 fonts.

Paragraphs 2, 3 &4 must use evidence from the novel and real life to support your argument. Make sure to reference the page or chapter where the evidence can be found. Use the outline provided to map out your essay.

Writing Prompts:

1) Throughout the novel we learn how feelings are suppressed in the community. Using evidence from the novel and your own life write a persuasive argument in support or against this practice.

2) Using three aspects of the community write a convincing argument to persuade people to move there. Use evidence from the novel and your own life to support your argument.

3) Using three aspects of the community write a convincing argument to dissuade people to move there. Use evidence from the novel and your own life to support your argument.

4) Using memories Jonas received from The Giver, outline three important lessons or values learned from them (both positive & negative). Use evidence from the novel and your own life to support your argument.

5) Euthanasia (assisted suicide or mercy killing) is one of the more controversial issues in the novel. Using evidence from the novel and your own life write a persuasive argument

Revise/Edit:

Take your time to read each sentence and check for clear ideas.

 Avoid using “I” or “You” in this paper. The over-use of these words will cause your paper to sound immature.

Make sure to capitalize each word and name properly. For example, The Giver, Receiver of Memory, etc.

Use quotations correctly. When providing evidence, use direct quotes and identify the chapter/page from which the evidence was taken. For example:

In chapter twenty-two the author suggests that Jonas was struggling with his choice.

She states, “Once he had yearned for choice. Then, when he had had a choice, he had made the wrong one: the choice to leave.”
