Dear 8th Grade Students and Parents/Guardians:
The Newark Middle School Student Council will be sponsoring an 8 th Grade Dance on Friday, June 19, 2015, from 8:00 p.m. to 10:30
p.m. in the Newark Middle School gym. Music will be provided by a D.J., and free refreshments will be served.
 Tickets will be sold during 8th grade lunch from Thursday, June 11 through Wednesday, June 17, at a cost of $6.00.
 Tickets will be sold in room 170 before and after school on Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19, at a cost of $9.00.
 Tickets sold at the door the night of the dance will cost $12.00.
In past years questions have surfaced about the 8 th Grade Dance. Because of this, we would like to give you as many facts as possible
at this time. First, the 8th Grade Dance is not a prom. It is not a formal. It is an opportunity for 8th graders to celebrate with their
classmates.
 There should be no formal gowns, tuxedos, or limousines.
 Girls are encouraged to wear casual dresses or a skirt and blouse.
 Boys are encouraged to wear dress pants, a nice shirt, and a tie.
 All attire must meet our regular school dress code expectations.
 If plans for extravagance are detected, the dance will be canceled immediately.
Second, there have been questions about who may attend the dance. The following guidelines will apply:
 Only students currently enrolled at the Newark Middle School may attend this dance.
 While the dance is intended primarily for our 8th grade students, an 8th grader may invite a 7th grader as his or her guest.
 6th graders must wait until next year to participate in this dance which is designed for an older peer group.
Finally, it is also important that you and your child are aware of the academic and behavioral guidelines being used to determine
who may attend the 8th Grade Dance. Beginning on Monday, April 13, 2015, a student assigned to any of the following will not be
allowed to attend the dance:
 5 or more instances of being sent out of class to Room 115 (our Time Out and ISS room) for any reason.
 3 or more 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. detentions
 2 or more separate instances of in-school suspension
 1out-of-school suspension
 In addition, any students who are failing two or more classes as of June 10 will be ineligible to attend the dance.
 Please note that these guidelines also apply to 7th grade students who may be planning to attend the dance as a guest of an 8 th
grader.
Our goal is that all students be eligible to attend the dance. With parents, staff, and students working together we are sure we can make
this happen. If you have any concerns and/or questions, please feel free to call the middle school at 332-3295.
Sincerely,
Michelle Malchoff
