ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT
Austin Health is one of Victoria’s largest health care providers.

LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT
Cardiology Director – A/Prof Omar Farouque
The Cardiology Department is responsible for the provision of an extensive range of cardiac
services to inpatients and outpatients including general cardiology, echocardiography, cardiac
catheterisation and interventional procedures and non-invasive diagnostic procedures.

POSITION OBJECTIVE
 To train fellows to a level of proficiency in Echocardiography that they may return to their
place of origin and assume work as independent practitioners.
 To ensure that fellows are current in their understanding of recent advances in the field,
particularly advances which apply to daily practice.
 To understand and participate in the clinical audit process.
 To participate and run a clinical research project within the department, aiming for a first
author publication in a peer-reviewed medical journal, and to assist other fellows with
projects.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
CLINICAL
1. A high standard of clinical care and a proven track record in clinical research.
2. The ability and commitment to work as a team member with senior medical, resident,
nursing and other staff.
3. Attendance at and active participation in regular Cardiology meetings

Specific responsibilities will include:
 Echo laboratory duties including performance and reporting of Transthoracic
Echocardiograms, Transoesophageal Echocardiograms and Treadmill Stress
Echocardiograms, and supervision of registrars and technologists.

Cardiac CT & MRI duties including performance and reporting of multi-slice CT and
cardiac MRI.
RESEARCH
 Development of research protocols and involvement with cardiac imaging research
projects including CRT (cardiac resynchronisation therapy).
2. Involvement in any other studies being undertaken by the Cardiology department.
TEACHING
 Involvement in teaching/training of medical staff at all levels, from undergraduate to
postgraduate M.D., Ph.D. students
2. Active involvement in departmental lecture series, in particular weekly Echocardiography
Meetings.
Generic




Undertake not to reveal to any person or entity any confidential information relating to
patients and employees, policies, processes and dealings and not to make public
statements relating to the affairs of Austin Health without prior authority of the Chief

Actively participate in the ongoing identification, assessment, treatment and prevention of
risks.
Participate in the emergency incident response activities, as defined within the Emergency
Response Manual, as and when required, at the direction of management.
5. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential for Performance of the Position

Registered Medical Practitioner in the State of Victoria, preferably with post graduate
qualifications in an area relevant to Cardiology

A commitment to quality, excellence and best practice in the delivery of cardiac
services to Austin Health’s patients (including inpatient services, outpatient services,
diagnostic and interventional services)

An understanding of the role of clinical audit and quality review in the process of patient
service improvement

Desirable but not essential for Performance of the Position
Proven track record in cardiac imaging, both clinically and in terms of published material.
