Degree Completion Scholarship
Dear Student:
Thank you for your interest in the Degree Completion Scholarship. Attached you will find the
necessary application materials.
Eligible candidates should be full-time (minimum of 12 hours/semester) degree-seeking,
undergraduate students at Northern Illinois University with a declared a major in the College of Health
and Human Sciences. Candidates must possess a grade point average of at least 3.0/4.0, be in good
academic standing, and be graduating by August 2017. Preference will be given to students who exhibit
financial need (as determined by the NIU Financial Aid Office; financial need will be verified). If an
applicant is not eligible for financial aid, he/she is still encouraged to apply if all other criteria are satisfied.
The following must be completed for you to be considered for this award:
1. Application form.
2. Essay/Personal Statement. Applicants must provide a one page personal statement. Students
should explain how this award would facilitate their degree completion.
3. Transcripts. Applicants must provide copies of transcripts from any and all colleges and
universities attended (transcripts need not be “Official Transcripts”).
All of the required materials must be submitted together. Individual pieces will not be accepted.
Students should compile all necessary components and submit them at one time.
Selection of Recipient:
1. The selection of the recipient(s) will be made under the guidance of the Dean, College of Health
and Human Sciences or an appropriate committee of the Dean’s choosing.
2. All scholarship(s) awarded shall be for one academic year.
3. In the event a recipient withdraws from the University, or is no longer a declared major in the
College of Health and Human Sciences, prior to receiving the scholarship funds, the funds allocated
for the scholarship may be granted to another qualified student(s).
The Degree Completion Scholarship can be applied to any educational expenses. The $1,000 award
will be deposited into the student’s bursar accounts for the 2016-2017 academic year ($500 for fall and
$500 for spring).
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all materials are submitted no later than
February 1, 2016. This postmark deadline date will be strictly enforced. Recipient(s) will be
announced prior to the beginning of the fall 2016 semester.
