Shout Kernow Hilary Coleman and I recently had a meeting with Terry and Anne Knight, about our recent publication Shout Kernow, and our latest project Hark! The Glad Sound of Cornish Carols. They suggested that it may be of interest on the Old Cornwall Society website. Shout Kernow is about the wonderful tradition of Cornish pub singing (see links below). For this project we travelled the length and breadth of Cornwall, recording the songs we heard, taking photos and talking to the singers. We went from Bude and Calstock through Cornwall to St Just and Cadgwith, and even the Isles of Scilly. Using the information we gathered on the way we wrote a book with the background to the songs and information on the singers and places we visited. The book includes scores of the tunes and harmonies; the song words; photos, old and new; and two CDs with the featured songs. Please see attached information card. The Plan for the Carol book will be similar to our previous publication, Shout Kernow which will be to travel to particular places to record the carols being sung in situ ‘where they do belong to be’, so Hellesveor in St Ives, and Jesse in Padstow. As well as on particular occasions/events - Redruth Wassail, Bodmin Wassail, Picrous Eve, St Just Feast, etc. We also wanted to represent a variety of locations: church, chapel, pub, out on the street, people’s houses, etc. Carols are embedded in the communities. We hope to select ones that are most popular or meaningful to the area they come from or to the people who sing them. The book will contain harmonised scores (as close as possible to what is recorded or written by the composer), two CDs of the songs sung in situ, backgrounds to the songs and composers and personal memories of the people who sing them plus pictures and photos old and new. To help fund this project we have produced a Christmas card, which we are selling at £5 for 6. I have attached a poster for these cards which we were hoping you might add to the Old Cornwall Society website. I have also attached a poster for a forthcoming event, Degol Stul, in the hope that you would also put this up on the website.
