Spring 1 – MTP - Year 3 Title: Veni, Vidi, Vici – The Romans Rule Timescale: 6 weeks Rationale: Welcome to the Roman Empire. This term we will be continuing on our journey through the ages, picking up where we left off with the Celts and travelling overseas to Italy and the Roman Empire. We will learn what it was like to be a Roman – how they lived, what they ate and what they did for fun. We will look at the Roman invasion and occupied Britain. The children will be given the chance to be a Roman for the day and try some Roman cuisine… not dormouse, I promise! We will walk in the footsteps of the Romans with a visit to the Newport Roman Villa, and create artwork based off Roman Mosaics. They will also learn about the Roman Gods. Linking to this topic, in Literacy this term we will be looking at Myths and Legends. The children will be immersed in the Roman myths, such as Romulus and Remus - the founding of Rome, and Orion and how he became a constellation in the sky. We will also explore myths and legends from around the globe, the Greek tales of Theseus and the Minotaur, Perseus and Medusa and even some closer to home. As a class, we will create our own myth, featuring our own hero (or heroine) as they journey on a quest for the Gods, battle against mythical beasts and face incredible challenges. Our topic will continue in many of the core subjects. As mentioned above, in art the children will be creating mosaics and looking at Roman architecture, and for design and technology learning to make a Roman dish. In music the children will be listening to various different types of Roman music, for home and war, and will get the opportunity to create their own. The Big Questions: Hook: 1. What was Roman life like? 2. How did they become such a strong nation? 3. Where did it all go wrong? The children will get to experience life as a Roman with our very own Roman day… Toga required! The children will learn to cook a Roman dish and create Roman art. They will get the opportunity to become archaeologists, to sift through the layers of time and handle real Roman artefacts. We will also be visiting a real Roman villa. Take-Away Task: Choose one of these topics to research: Roman Religion (gods and myths) Roman Sports and Leisure (gladiators, competitions) Roman Towns (e.g. houses and town planning) Roman Homes (e.g. mosaics and food) Roman Army (e.g. soldiers, road building) Spring 1 – MTP - Year 3 Create a fact file that has pictures and facts written in sections.
