GLENDALE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES 2012-2013 SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES (SES) QUESTIONS & ANSWERS The following is a list of questions and answers that will help you understand why you received this brochure. Q. A. Why did I receive this brochure? Your child is eligible to receive FREE tutoring from a state-approved tutoring provider. Q. A. Why does my child qualify for tutoring? If your child qualifies for the free/reduced lunch program by October 31, 2012, and in 2012-2013 is in grades K-12 and enrolled at Edison, Franklin, Marshall, or Muir Elementary Schools; Roosevelt, Toll, or Wilson Middle Schools; or Glendale or Hoover High Schools, they are eligible to receive tutoring. Q. A. What are Supplemental Educational Services (SES)? These are tutoring services paid for under the No Child Left Behind Act to help your child improve his/her reading, math, or science skills. Q. A. What do I have to do to receive these FREE tutoring services? You must fill out the Sign-up Sheet, choose your providers, and mail it using the envelope provided in this brochure or deliver it to the GUSD Administration Offices, Rm. 116. You must be sure that the Sign-up Sheet is signed by YOU and we have all of the information to process the application. Q. A. What is a provider? A provider is the company that will tutor your child. Q. A. Is there a deadline for me to register for these services? You must fill out the Sign-up Sheet, mail it or deliver it to the GUSD Administration Offices, Rm. 116. Your Sign-Up sheet must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2012. Q. A. How do I select a provider? You can use the guide on page 2 to assist you in selecting the tutoring provider. Q. A. What is the cost for the FREE tutoring? The tutoring is absolutely FREE. There is NO cost to you at all. Review the parent brochure for the number of tutoring hours available through each provider. Q. A. When will the tutoring start? The tutoring can start sometime during the 2012-2013 school year. The earlier you turn in your Sign-in Sheet, the earlier the tutoring can start. Q. A. What happens if there are more applications than space available and the program becomes overenrolled? There are a limited number of slots available for this program. Once the program becomes overenrolled, the students who apply will be ranked based on achievement level. Students with lower achievement level will be given priority. The remaining students will be placed on a wait list and will be served as space becomes available with the selected provider. Q. A. In what subject will tutoring be provided for my child? Your child will receive services in either ELA or Math based on their recent California Standards Test results. 1 HOW TO USE THIS BROCHURE TO CHOOSE A PROVIDER All providers are listed on the grid on pages 4-16. These pages describe the providers’ service by grade level, subject, tutoring hours, tutoring location, student-tutor ratio, and whether it provides a computer, internet access or transportation. We suggest you start by crossing out providers that DO NOT fit your needs. Follow these steps to narrow down your choices: FIRST: use the grid and cross out the names of providers that: DO NOT provide tutoring to the grade your child will be in during the 2012-2013 school year. DO NOT tutor on the days you want tutoring. DO NOT tutor in any of the group settings you think is going to help your child best (one tutor per child, one tutor for groups of 2-5 students, or one tutor for groups of 6-10 students). DO NOT offer a location that is convenient to you. (Be sure to call and ask!) ONLY offer online tutoring if you DO NOT want “online only”. ONLY offer online tutoring and DO NOT give you a computer/internet access if you DO NOT have a computer or internet access. SECOND: For each provider that you have not crossed, read about the provider’s staff qualifications, experience, and effectiveness. If you have questions, call the phone number on the provider’s page and ask them your questions. THIRD: Choose your first choice and second. If you do not have a second choice and too many people request your first choice, your child may not receive tutoring. HOW TO FILL OUT THE SIGN-UP SHEET Read the whole Sign-up Sheet. 1. Fill in your child’s information. 2. Put your choices on the lines for first and second choice. 3. Sign it. 4. Put your phone number and the date. 5. Send it in the envelope provided or return to the GUSD Administration Offices, Rm. 116 before the deadline (4:00 pm, November 14, 2012). IMPORTANT You must sign the Sign-up Sheet in order for your child to receive tutoring. Without your signature, we cannot give your information to the provider you selected so they can set up your child’s tutoring. No one but the provider you choose and your child’s school will receive any information about your child and the SES program from GUSD. Please be sure to put your phone number so we can contact you if we have any questions about your Sign-up Sheet. If you need more information, contact Linda Conover at 818-241-3111, ext. 334 at GUSD. 2 QUESTIONS FOR FAMILIES TO ASK SES PROVIDERS The Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program offers families a chance to get their children extra academic help in reading, mathematics or science. You should feel good about the provider you pick to help your child. If you are trying to choose an SES provider, the following questions may help you pick the best SES provider for your child. 1. Where are the tutoring services provided? Services are offered in a variety of settings including libraries, provider offices, family home, community centers, and online. Make sure you and your child feel comfortable with the location. 2. When do you offer tutoring services? Students can receive tutoring services anytime outside the regular school day. After school is the most common time for SES, but tutoring services could also be offered before school or on weekends. Make sure the services are scheduled at a time that works for you and your family so that your child will be able to attend regularly. 3. How often and for how long will my child be tutored? This may vary from every day to a few times a week. Make sure you know how many sessions your child will receive and how long each session will last. 4. Who will be instructing my child? What are their qualifications? Ask about the background and qualifications of tutors who will be working with your child. SES providers are not required to hire certified teachers. However, you should be confident that each instructor’s level of experience and knowledge has prepared him/her to help your child improve academically. 5. Are tutoring services provided one-to-one, in small groups (2-5 students), or large groups (6-10 students)? Some providers only offer one-to-one tutoring; others offer their services to groups of students at the same time. Ask the provider what mode of instruction they follow and how many students are assigned to each tutor during services. 6. Do instructors speak languages other than English? If your child’s first language is not English and needs primary language support, ask whether the provider can offer services in your child’s first language. 7. Are there support services for bilingual parents? If your first language is not English, ask the provider if they have bilingual staff to assist you. 8. Can you meet the learning needs of students with disabilities? If your child has disabilities, be sure that the provider can accommodate those disabilities. Ask if the provider currently works with students who have similar disabilities. All services provided should be consistent with your child’s individualized educational program (IEP) or specialized services under Section 504. SES is an addition to, not a replacement for, the instruction and services required under IDEA and Section 504. 3 State-Approved Supplemental Educational Service Providers Provider #1 Academia de Servicio de Tutoria 2550 Corporate Place C108, Monterey Park, CA 91754 info@academiadeserviciodetutoria.com, 800-293-3091 Website: www.academiadeserviciodetutoria.com #1 Academia de Servicio de Tutoria provides individual and group tutoring 12 hours a day to students enrolled in grades K-12 in the subject areas of reading, writing and mathematics.
