Providence Day's senior field hockey players truly define “student-athlete”
Charlotte, NC – October 12, 2014 – As the Chargers’ Field Hockey team begins to prepare for
the upcoming NCISAA state championship, the preparation and play of their five seniors will
certainly be key to the team’s success. If the performance of these five seniors in and out of
the classroom is any indicator, the team will have a very successful tournament run.
According to Head Coach Miki Osherow: “This group of seniors is so special that for the first
time in eight years I have designated all five as ‘captains.’” The girls really complement each
other well as leaders. They recognize the strengths and weaknesses in each other and
partner together to help put their best foot forward and really lead the team in a positive
manner. I believe a lot of their leadership experience comes from the participation in the
community and playing multiple sports.”
One of the goals at Providence Day is to
develop students with academic
excellence, outstanding character,
personal integrity and social
responsibility so they may become active,
responsible and caring global citizens.
These characteristics are displayed by the
five seniors who have led the Chargers to
a 13-3 record and who perfectly define
the “student-athlete.”
Reviewing some of the key individual
accomplishments of these young women
will unquestionably confirm that the
Providence Day student goals have
certainly been achieved by the senior
members of the 2015 Field Hockey team.
Sara Cotsakis: currently Sara’s GPA (Grade Point Average) is at 4.6 and she is a member of
the Magna Cum Laude Society, National Merit Commended Scholar, National French Honor
Society, National Honor Society, and AP Scholar with Distinction. She is also a Co-leader of
the Students of Service ABLE Club which tutors adults trying to obtain their GED’s at Central
Piedmont Community College. Sara is also active in the Students of South Africa Club which
helps raise money to provide meals for the Red Hill Preschool in South Africa and the
French Club which discusses French culture and current issues in France. And, when spring
rolls around, you’ll see Sara running for the varsity track and field team.
Celine Ives: despite Celine’s year-round, extremely busy schedule, she has been able to
achieve a 4.27 GPA. She is a participant in the student service project called Sunday Soup
where she makes and serves drinks at the Crisis Assistance Ministry with other PD students.
Celine is a member of the French Club discussing French culture and issues. She also finds
time to participate in the student run P.A.W.S. initiative which helps distressed and
abandoned animals through the Humane Society of Charlotte. When the field hockey season
concludes, Celine gets a weekend off and then starts up as a key member of our NCISAA
State Champion basketball team. In the spring, she is back on the turf playing a key role on
our girls’ soccer team. Celine can definitely be called a “ring-leader.” Entering her senior
year, she has already accumulated four state championship rings.
Lily Norris: Lily is also a member of the impressive GPA club achieving a 4.0 during her
four years at PD. One of her most important roles as a Students of Service is volunteering
with Big Brother, Big Sister. Through this program, she works with and mentors young
students at Rama Road Elementary School. Lily also finds time to work with Share Charlotte,
an organization that works with non-profit groups in the Charlotte area. One of her
interests is directing films. By being a director, Lily is able to develop her management and
leadership skills by motivating and working with actors and crew members.
Hannah Scully: this veteran player currently has a 4.31 GPA. Hannah is a four year, field
hockey varsity letter winner. Her speed and quickness on the field is quite obvious and
probably can be attributed to her 15 years as a ballet dancer. Hannah is presently working
in a Nutcracker production getting ready for the upcoming holiday season. During the
summer months, she works as a volunteer teacher assistant for the Freedom School.
Hannah is also a member of the Students of Service ABLE Club which tutors adults trying to
obtain their GED’s at Central Piedmont Community College. Her interest in global
citizenship is evident in her two school travel abroad trips. She has participated in a
language immersion trip to both Germany and Ireland.
Claudia Westwood: like the other senior members of the team, Claudia has been able to
achieve a very high GPA; hers is at 4.43. She is also a member of the Chinese National Honor
Society and PD’s Chinese Club. Claudia’s global interests have led her to participate in Model
United Nations and to serve as Leader of Global Studies on the Student Advisory Board. She
is a member of PD’s Roundsquare International Ambassador for Singapore Global
Conference on Sustainability. As a participant in Club Unity, Claudia helps out with the local
Special Olympics. Lastly, she is a representative in the Rotary Club’s New Gen Peacebuilders,
a project started to bring English education to rural Chinese elementary schools.
