SPORTS ROUND UP – DECEMBER 2014
Inter-Schools’ Netball Tournament at The Royal High School
Freshford were unlucky to lose their first match 2 -1 after an understandably nervous start against
Newbridge, great defence from Rebecca and a stunning shot from Bella Hemmings ensured a gripping
match! The next game we drew 1-1 against Widcome, a tight match against evenly matched opposition,
really good defence from Charlotte and another ace shot from Lexi D! All the girls made a real effort to
drive onto the ball and all the girls defended their hearts out!
The last pool match we lost 3-0 against a very tall, very good team from St Johns - our girls who are all year
5 apart from one year 6 struggled against the overwhelmingly bigger team! However there were some
really good passages of place with Elsie using her pace and Lexi S finding some great space. A tight group
overall and a missed goal here and there meant that we finished last in our group, however I do not
believe that there was much to choose between at least 3 of the teams!
So we were in the play off for 7th/8th place against Bathwick St Mary, in this game we played so well with
some really lovely fast passing, 2 great goals from India and some brilliant defence from the other shooter
Fleur meant that St Mary's were unable to clear the ball and gave us the chance to score again.
I am very proud of all the girls, they really enjoyed themselves which was the main thing!! Next year when
all those year 5's are year 6's I suspect we'll finish a bit higher!
Congratulations to St. Stephen’s, St. John’s & Bathwick St. Mary’s as they progress to the B&NES Finals that will take
place on Tuesday 3rd March

Tap exam
Delilah, Fleur, Ruby and Tilly all excelled in their Grade 1 Royal Academy of Dance Tap exam with Ruby, Delilah
and Tilly all achieving a Distinction and Fleur a Merit. A veritable chorus line of Year 5 girls!
Help in the school library – do you have half an hour to spare on Tuesday afternoons?
If you have any time to spare on a Tuesday afternoon and would be willing to join our team of library volunteers,
come and speak to Helen, Pippa or our current Monday and Wednesday volunteers Anna Jenkins and Patsy Pope,
who can explain what is entailed. We would love to hear from you.
Congratulations!
We were thrilled to hear that Lexi (Davies), who takes ballet, tap and modern at Dorothy Coleborn School of Dancing
in Bath, not only passed her Grade 1 Royal Academy of Dance Tap exam with a Distinction, but scored 95 out of 100.
This was not only the highest mark in the class, but also according to the dance school is virtually unachievable in the
discipline of tap. Very many congratulations to Lexi.
It’s nearly Christmas!..............
Monday 8th December
Internal Post Box opens
Our Internal Christmas Box opens for children to post cards for friends at school. Please make sure that all
envelopes are clearly addressed with both forename and surname and preferably class, which makes it easier for
Santa’s post helpers with their deliveries.
Bath Schools’ Carol Service - Bath Abbey 10.30 – 11.30am
All juniors are participating in this annual Bath Schools’ Carol Service on Monday, joining nearly 900 pupils from
other Bath schools. We have been informed this afternoon that parents may arrive at the Abbey from 10.00am, but
once the small amount of seats are filled the Abbey door will be closed. As already advised, you will not be able to
sit with your child. All the children will be leaving school by coach at 9.15am and returning in time for lunch.
Thursday 11th December – hall decorating
Some parents have kindly volunteered to decorate Freshford Village Hall on Thursday morning . They will require
plenty of seasonal greenery and ask if you could gather some and either leave it in the school car park or at the
village hall.
Friday 12th December 2.00pm
‘Whoops A Daisy Angel’ Nativity’ – Freshford Village Hall
The infant children have been busily rehearsing this year’s nativity and are looking forward to sharing ‘Whoops a
Daisy Angel’ with you. This year Mr. Parker ( father of Eleri ) will be filming the performance so that DVDs will be
available for you to purchase. We would ask that you do not take photos or videos during the performance as this
is very distracting both for the children on stage and for other members of the audience. After the performance
tea/coffee and cakes will be available. Traditionally these refreshments are supplied by the parents of KS1 children.
You should all have received an email from Alex Malir about this.
End of day arrangements
As all junior children will be at school during the afternoon, the usual buses / taxis will wait outside school as
normal. It will be assumed that all infant children will be collected after the Nativity by the parent/carer/ relation
who was attending the performance.
Monday 15th December – 2.00pm
Senior Citizens tea and mince pies
We are inviting grandparents, uncles and aunts, together with other senior citizens who you may know, for tea and
mince pies on Monday 15th December at 2.00pm. The children will also be entertaining them with Christmas songs
and music.
Wednesday 17th December
Christmas lunch
All the children who don’t normally have school lunches are invited to join us for Christmas lunch on this day.
Should you not already have advised us, please let us know by Monday if your child would like a lunch so that Jo has
sufficient notice to place her food order. Thank you.
Thursday 18th December 9.15am
Christmas Service : St. Peter’s Church
As advised in our parentmail earlier this week, we hope you will join us for this annual celebration of Christmas at St.
Peter’s Church. Please remember to advise if you will be attending and which children you will be accompanying to
and from church. Sheets will be available to sign from Monday next week. Please ensure that all pupils are wearing
their school uniform for this service.
Children’s Christmas parties
The children will be enjoying their Christmas Parties later in the morning and are invited to ‘bling up’ their school
uniform with Christmas accessories once we have returned from church. There will be no hot meal provided by the
school on this day, but instead we are asking that every child brings a Christmas Lunch Box. The PTA will be
decorating the hall and providing festive crackers to make this a very Christmassy occasion - more information
nearer the time.
Wednesday 10th December
Mathletics trial using our new iPads – Mill Class
On Wednesday we will begin a pilot of the Mathletics online mathematics resource in Mill class, just as we
are piloting the use of Mangahigh in Joyce class, with the intention of identifying the most effective
resource to support all of our children in consolidating and developing their knowledge and understanding
of mathematics across the school.
Khan Academy Pilot
In Joyce class a small group of children will also be participating in a project (initially in mathematics) to
explore the potential of the Khan Academy’s online learning and assessment resources for developing
further and more personalised opportunities for learning that is self-paced, mastery based and highly
differentiated.
Thursday 11th December
International ‘The Hour of Code’ event during the Computer Science at Ralph Allen School
Mill Class will be attending this exciting event at Ralph Allen School next Thursday morning and will return before
lunch. Run by experienced computer science teachers, this promises to be a really hands on and informative
morning for our children.
Parking
May we remind everybody about parking in the vicinity of the school. We have been advised that an
increasing number of parents and carers have been parking on the pavement opposite the school. On one
morning this week there were reported to be approximately five cars parked on the narrow pavement
immediately after the zig zag lines. Parking in this way is illegal and forces all pedestrians to walk in the
road, often with pushchairs or accompanying young children. Similarly, elderly people attempting to walk
down to the surgery will be endangered. A big plea to park considerately so that the whole community can
move around the village in safety.
Term ends on Friday 19th December and we return in the New Year on Monday 5th January 2015
