Department:
Aurora is a programme aimed at women in academia at up to Senior Lecturer level or
equivalent. It is aimed at enabling more women to develop the leadership side of their
careers. The University therefore invites applications from women in any job family at grades
8 & 9 initially; if capacity remains, we will open it to other grades.
There is no need for candidates to be in leadership roles already; the programme is for
women who would like the opportunity to explore their own interest in and aptitude for the
leadership element of their profession, including those who may not previously have thought
of their career in this way.
Please tell us briefly about how you display leadership in your current role: (no more than
150 words)
We would expect the applicant to have identified how they practice both formal and informal
leadership, and thought about what that means in terms of their personal performance and
contribution. Quantity of leadership experience is irrelevant; leadership can be displayed in
many small ways across a range of activities.
What questions about your own leadership would you like to answer by participation in the
programme? (No more than 150 words)
Applicants should show that they have thought about their strengths, weaknesses, aptitudes
and preferences, and how they are discernible in their current leadership and management
activity. Expressing doubt is no detriment, but we would expect more than: “I was curious so
I thought I’d give it a try.”
What do you expect to be doing professionally in 10 years’ time, and how do you think
participation in this programme will help? (No more than 150 words)
Applicants should show how they are actively and credibly planning their academic or
professional careers and that they have considered the role leadership will play in them,
anticipating how the programme will accelerate, enrich or otherwise make them more

successful. You may wish to comment on other development activities that you have
undertaken or are planning, and how they fit with the Aurora programme.
You will be required to attend five one-day workshops as part of the programme, but you
don’t have to attend them all in the same place. The exception is the Action Learning Set,
which must be taken in the same location as you choose for the Power and Politics module.
