Karen Sieracki asked about the plan to integrate the piece for global chapters. Phil Adams stated it is meant to be a generic piece, the local chapter brochure template allows each chapter to input their own local information. Karen Sieracki asked about putting in video links. Phil Adams confirmed that is an option. Wayne Silzel suggested a hotlink to each chapter website. Wayne Silzel suggested highlighting the foreign chapters. Karen Sieracki asked they not be called “foreign”. Stephen Rudow noted the phrase land economics is focused, and many members work in the broader arena of real estate, perhaps more general real estate and less emphasis on land use, land economics. Steve Gragg stated this is long overdue and can go a long way to refresh our identity and give our chapters some great tools to promote membership. Tony Forte asked how it will be rolled out. Phil Adams stated chapters can work with Sheila Hamilton or Phil Adams to assist them with their brochures. Bronwyn Krog asked about a timeline for the chapters to get their sites updated. Steven Gragg noted that once approved by the Board of Governors, chapters can begin to use their logos. Cindy Hammond asked if the website is designed to be viewed on a mobile phone easily. Phil Adams stated it should. Brad Wood commented that it is great and would have been a nice piece to have during their recent installation. Miguel Tremblay suggested a note about professional credits being added to the brochure. Jim Musbach remarked the brochure has a strong emphasis in the 10 year requirement, but in their chapter they look at the merit of the individual. Robert McBride supported Jim Musbach’s comments and to downplay the 10 year requirement in the brochure. Cindy Hammond commented that the 10 years of experience is helpful to distinguish LAI from other competing organizations. Miguel Tremblay stated their chapter has “members in waiting” and are invited to their meetings as prospective members until they meet the requirement. Steven Gragg noted that many chapters are addressing the GAP issue and it is a sustainability issue for the entire organization. He will be looking at that during his presidency. Tim Youmans and other LEF Board Members dismissed themselves to attend the LEF meeting. Chapter Website template update – Sheila Hamilton reported the chapter website template implementation status below: Implemented Ely Chapter Sacramento Chapter Golden Gate Chapter – On Hold – Ann Slade Atlanta – using Toomey – going live 4/25/15 Signed agreements Philadelphia – using Toomey Requested agreement but not signed copy not yet returned Minnesota – Not using Toomey Considering Los Angeles Orange County – Applied for CSC grant San Diego Phoenix Madrid Amy Neches noted that Golden Gate is on hold because they are not sure what they are selling for LAI. How much should be made available to members vs. nonmembers, without devaluing the membership. Steven Gragg reported the Orange County chapter has applied for a chapter services grant. Chapters can install the template on their own or hire a vendor. Wayne Silzel reported the Orange County chapter would like to be able to email broadcast their meeting notices, and have a website with flexibility to easily update on their own. Millard Lee asked if Wayne has been able to train their members to look at the website. Wayne Silzel stated they have their past events and all of their events for the entire year posted. 1/3 of their attendees are guests and are given an information packet as a take away. Chapter Support Grants – Steven Gragg Steven Gragg reported the committee consists of RVPs and ARVPs, the Treasurer and the Assistant Treasurer. The Phoenix chapter received a grant in 2014 to hold a joint meeting with the Feds, the Zia Chapter is considering a grant for their chapter. The Orange County chapter submitted a grant request to assist with implementation of the website template. Chapter Tax Status – Sheila Hamilton provided an update of the status of chapter’s IRS standings. Amy Neches requested more assistance from LAI to help chapters stay in compliance. A list of forms and documents necessary to reinstate their chapter. Sheila Hamilton noted that LAI’s CPA Carolyn Sechler will be assisting the Golden Gate Chapter with its reinstatement, and will share those final documents with the other chapters. Bronwyn Krog asked for advisement on the Canadian Chapters. Sheila Hamilton stated LAI will need to consult with a Canadian attorney. Steven Gragg turned over the remainder of the meeting to Ann King, Past President of LAI Memphis to lead the discussion of other topics. Other topics – best practices - Group Cindy Hammond reported the Phoenix Chapter will be holding twice yearly dinners with an exclusive speaker to try and differentiate LAI from other group. Millard Lee stated there is a lot of inertia with the current membership, the same people show up out of habit. The leadership discussed bringing younger people from their firms to the meetings, and have found the personal approach most effective. Wayne Silzel stated they may try a $500 corporate sponsorship that would include one regular member, and staff from that company’s office may attend meetings at member rate, and perhaps be a speaker at a meeting. Todd Cabanban noted the Ely chapter is trying to get new members involved in leadership early on to better the chances of growing membership and keeping them engaged. Geoff Baetzel noted the UAE chapter is trying to attract UAE nationals and they have no real background for professional associations. They are currently at 32, targeting for 50 for their 3rd year and making sure they are people with substance. Tom Goodwin noted the age of their membership is a problem, they will lose 80% of their members within the next 7 years based on age. Michelle Henrie noted the Zia chapter is having its 10th anniversary and reaching out to inactive members. The chapter is working on a revitalization project and have submitted a grant request to the Land Economics Foundation. Amy Neches reported the Golden Gate chapter uses the exclusivity approach to recruiting members. They emphasize that you must be nominated and inducted. It is their policy that the new member must attend the induction ceremony or that are deferred to the following year. They limit members to senior leaders in the community and no sales/marketing is allowed. Ann King reported the Memphis Chapter will give 4 student scholarship this year and be inducted as student members. Ann King reported the Memphis Chapter provides an “update your profile” hard copy form at their meetings and also send a request to members annually. Cindy Hammond asked about chapter sponsorship programs. Todd Cabanban noted the Ely Chapter past president is responsible for securing sponsors and they have several different levels, a sample is posted on the LAI.org website under chapter resources. Tim Hefler reported the Sacramento Chapter has a sponsor program. $300/sponsorship includes 3 to 5 tickets to the lunch, webpage sponsorship is $500. Includes a 1 minute pitch at the program. Wayne Silzel reported the Orange County chapter charges $250 to sponsor a single meeting, includes name on website and at the meeting, and a 3 minute pitch. Amy Neches reported the Golden Gate chapter does not have sponsorships and they charged $60 per person to cover the cost of the meetings. They did have sponsors for their LEW. Suzanne Varco noted the San Diego chapter has sponsorships for the installation event, typically $5k. They are currently raising funds for the LEW and are focusing on nonmembers.
