Grounds and Gardens Salting and Gritting Policy
Timing
1. On the day when snow has fallen and stayed.
2. On the day if temperatures are below freezing and ice has formed
3. If there is a visible ground frost, surfaces are checked and, if found slippery,
gritted.
4. If ice or snow is forecast for the following day at the discretion of the Estates
Supervisor.
5. Where snow or ice is forecast on a day when the University is closed, where
the day immediately prior to that is a normal work day, gritting may take place

Priority
The following priorities reflect the areas seen to be at the greatest risk of
causing accidents, by slipping/skidding, to the largest number of people. Any
times for completing the treatment of these areas have been set in accordance
with what can be "reasonably" achieved with the current staffing and equipment
levels.
Priority 1 - Before 9.00am

Priority 2 - Before 9.30am

Priority 3 - Before 10.00am

Priority 4:

After the initial operation, gritting may take place throughout the day to ensure
all surfaces, where possible, have been treated and in preparation for further ice
or snow if forecast.
Period of Operation
Gritting operations are to be carried out within the standard working week
Monday to Friday 8.00am to 4.00pm. At the discretion of the Estates
Supervisor, this may alter to 7.30am to 3.30pm.
