Minutes Friends of the Library Monday, Sept 29, 2014 Library Community Room Mary Ann O’Neil called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. Present: Mary Ann O’Neil, Mary Ann Melgey, Pat Berthiaume, Susan Brosnan, Elaine Leon, Marie Perrin, Linda Christensen, Mary Jo Nugent, Jan Clancy Minutes from Last Meeting: Elaine Leon read minutes from June 30, 2014. A correction was made to included Mary Jo Nugent as a member of the Program Committee. A motion was made and carried to accept the minutes as corrected. Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Melgey reported the balance for FOL is $8,130.65. She reported total revenue of $1,213.08 and expenses of $561.28 since the last meeting on June 30. A motion was made to accept the treasurer’s report by Linda Christensen and seconded by Elaine Leon. Motion carried. Secretary’s Report: Elaine Leon reported that 43 membership renewal letters were mailed in July. Currently, there are 10 Individual members, 16 Family members, and 15 Lifetime members. She reported that Stop & Shop in Uncasville and Target in Lisbon Landing were sent thank you letters for their donations. Stop & Shop donated bottled water for the Author’s Trail event at the library and Target donated a gift card (used in the Back to School basket). Director’s Report: Susan Brosnan, Director, reported that the summer reading program went well. She also explained the process for requesting the library meeting room for programs and meetings. There is a request form on the library website that can be downloaded or can be picked up at the library. Library Board: Jan Clancy reported that the Board will have elections next week. The replacement of the library roof was completed. The town is hoping that the gas line will be extended to the library soon to enable the replacement of the old oil furnace with a new gas furnace before the winter. Committee Reports: Program Committee: Mary Jo Nugent reported on 3 upcoming programs: The showing of the film “Real Dirt on Farmer John” on Wed. Oct. 22, Library Meeting Room, 6:30 p.m. The Broken Cup, a reading by Preston Resident Margaret Gibson from her new book of poetry by the same name, Thurs., Nov. 13, Library Meeting Room, 6:30 p.m. Black Bears in Connecticut, a program about the natural history of black bears and information on black bear research by state wildlife biologists by Jeanine Dell’Orfano and Halyna Bourne, Master Wildlife Conservationists with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Wildlife Division. Tuesday, Nov. 18, Library Meeting Room, 6:30 p.m. Linda Christensen will handle newspaper publicity for the 3 events. Book Sale Committee: Marie Perrin reported that the next book sale is in October at the Poquetanuck Fire Dept, 87 Route 2a, Preston. Set up will be at the fire house on Tuesday, October 19th from 9-11 a.m. The sale dates and hours are: FOL Minutes June 30, 2014 Page 1 of 3 Wed., Oct 22 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Thurs., Oct 23 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Fri., Oct 24 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sat., Oct 25 from 9 a.m. – 12 noon Breakdown of the remaining books will be done on Saturday following the sale. Pat Berthiaume is making a schedule of volunteers for set up, selling and breakdown. Please contact Pat at 860-885-4508 or by email at p.berthiaume@sbcglobal.net to volunteer. Marie Perrin said that more book ends were needed to properly display the books. Elaine Leon motioned that the Friends purchase 50 bookends. Jan Clancy seconded the motion. Motion carried. Old Business: Treasurer’s Audit: Linda Christensen reported that she successfully completed the required annual audit of the Friends treasury. She reported that the books were in order. Author’s Trail: Linda Christensen attended the final event at Mohegan Sun. Discussion indicated that it will be held again next year. The Friends funded a basket for the event’s raffle. Winter Basket Raffle: Mary Ann Melgey and Pat Berthiaume volunteered to make the basket. It will be displayed at the library from the beginning of November until the drawing on or about Dec 15. New Business: Museum Passes: Membership voted to fund the purchase of a family pass to Mystic Seaport. Suggested Purchases for the Library: The following were suggestions from the Director and library staff: Bicycle Rack (approx. $350) Picnic Table Felt Board for Children’s Programs (approx. $500) It was decided that the first 2 items would probably be purchased in the spring and the Director will do more research on specifics. A motion was made and carried to allocate approximately $500 (not including shipping) for the purchase of the felt board. Membership in the Friends of Connecticut Libraries: Motion was made and carried to renew our membership in this organization. Purchase of DVDs on farming: Mary Ann Melgey recommended the purchase of 3 DVDs on farming for the Library collection. A motion was made and carried to fund these purchases.
