We hope the children enjoyed the holiday, and are now ready for the busy spring term ahead. Although this is a short term there are lots of exciting activities to look forward to, including educational visits and workshops, as well as our usual range of after school clubs. This newsletter will give details of the key dates throughout the term, and some of the special events to look forward to over the coming weeks. Please send in any awards by Wednesday) Educational Visits There are many exciting visits to look forward to this term. C1SB and C2LR will be visiting Doncaster Airport as part of their ‘Wheels, Wings and Other Things’ topic. Classes 3SW, 4DS and 5HH will visit Cannon Hall to study ‘Homes From the Past’ Classes 6RA, 7OH and 8RK are spending a day with Rotherham Titans Rugby Club to learn about staying fit and healthy as part of their ‘Healthy Me’ topic. C9HWHO, C10MR and C11KK will be visiting York Castle Museum to go ‘Through the Decades’ and learn about life in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Family Learning Workshops This term there will be a series of writing workshops for KS1/Reception children and parents. Class teachers will be informing parents about specific events. We are sure you will find these very informative, and help you support your child’s learning. Fire Service Visit – Monday 18th January The Fire Service is planning to be in school today, talking to the children about the importance of fire safety in school and at home. There will be a mixture of talks and practical demonstrations. Young Voices 2016 – Tuesday 19th January The Year 5 children will be taking part in the Young Voices 2016 concert at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena today. This is a fabulous event, which the children have worked hard to prepare for and parents always thoroughly enjoy. Parents Evening You are invited into school on the following dates to discuss your child’s progress with their class teacher. Wednesday 20th January – 5 - 7pm Thursday 21st January – 3:30 – 5:30pm You will receive a separate letter about this - please send in your reply slip so that appointments can be allocated. Book Fair – w/c 1st February The travelling book fair will be in school this week, giving children and families the opportunity to purchase great value books. Do come along and have a look – it will be open each day after school. Half Term Holiday – Friday 5th February School closes for the half term holiday today, and reopens as normal on Monday 15 th February. World Thinking Day – Monday 22nd February Children who are members of Rainbows, Brownies, Cubs and Beavers are invited to wear their uniforms to school today, to mark National Thinking Day. World Book Day – Thursday 3rd March There will be lots of fun activities in school today to celebrate our love of books and reading. To tie in with the forthcoming science week and our recent ‘Space’ topic the theme for the day will be ‘Science Fiction’, and children will be invited to come to school dressed as their favourite sci-fi book or comic character. Watch out for more details shortly. Mother’s Day Tea Parties – Friday 4th & Monday 7th March There will be two Mother’s Day Tea Parties taking place at the following times; Classes 4DS & 5HH - Friday 4th March at 9:15am Classes 1SB, 2LR & 3SW - Monday 7th March at 2:15pm Class teachers will send out letters to confirm the details of these events closer to the time. KS1 DT Day – Tuesday 8th & Wednesday 9th March The KS1 children will be taking part in a design technology day, making model houses to support their topic of ‘Homes from the Past’. Parents are invited to join their children for this exciting day, letters will follow giving more details. Y5 & Y6 ‘Cool Britannia’ Decades Day – Thursday 10th March The Year 5 & 6 children will be organising a ‘Cool Britannia’ exhibition, highlighting the trends from the 60’s to present day, as part of their ‘Through the Decades’ topic. Parents will be invited to view the exhibition during the afternoon. More details to come. National Science Week – w/c Monday 14th March Once again we will be celebrating National Science Week with lots of exciting events and activities. More details will follow as events are confirmed. Y5 & Y6 Shakespeare Workshop – Monday 14th March The children in Y5 & Y6 will be taking part in a Shakespeare Workshop today, as a follow up to last term’s ‘All the World’s a Stage’ topic. Only a small number of schools in Rotherham have been chosen for this opportunity, and we hope that the children thoroughly enjoy the afternoon of activities. KS1 SATs and Phonics Meeting - Wednesday 16th March Parents are invited to meet with staff to find out more about the upcoming Y2 Spelling and Grammar tests and the Y1 Phonics screening. Letters will be sent to the parents involved giving more details. Easter Hat Competition For our Easter competition this year the children are invited to design and decorate an Easter hat. This might be a bonnet or a baseball cap – whichever you choose let your imagination run wild and see what you can create! There will be prizes for the winning designs in Nursery, Reception, Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2. More details will follow, but start thinking about your designs now! Easter Eucharist Service – Thursday 17th March You are invited to join us as we celebrate the Easter story in this very special service. Starting at 9:30am, the service will be led by Revd Philip Barringer and the children from Class 10MR. As always there will be refreshments served afterwards – we do hope you can join us. Easter Holiday – Thursday 17th March School closes for the Easter holiday on Thursday 17th March, as Friday 18th is an INSET day. School re-opens as normal on Monday 4th April. As mentioned earlier, do check your child’s book bag regularly for letters giving further information about these events, plus any extra activities added.
