Students will review the most common elements of article use and practice, practice, practice! “Graphing Calculator – Basics and Beyond”: Bring a TI-83 or IT-84 graphing calculator with you to the seminar and learn basic and advanced techniques using your calculator. “ ‘Hire’ Learning: What Employers Want You to Learn in College”: You will learn techniques that will help you become more successful as a college student and that will also improve the likelihood of getting hired in the future. Learn how to turn “higher learning” into ‘hire’ learning. “Infer Your Way to Better Grades”: College is not like high school. You must be able to read and think critically. One higher level skill used in reading comprehension is “inferring”. Learn how to infer while reading your college textbooks. Your comprehension will improve as well as your grades! “The Key to Solving Word Problems”: Attend this session to learn how to solve word problems. Learn the language, the process and the solution. Practice problems will be discussed. "Making Inferences": One of the most difficult tasks for any college student is mastering higher order thinking skills such as making inferences or drawing reasonable conclusions based on authors' suggestions. Learn techniques that will help you be successful in making correct inferences. "Math Survival Guide": Taking a math class this semester? Then this seminar is for you! Learn note-taking techniques, memory principles, and other effective study strategies targeted specifically at helping you to become a successful math student. "The Naked Truth": This seminar will help students differentiate fact from opinion while demonstrating how to discern other contributing factors. “Radicals”: Simplifying, multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting Radials. “Reading College Textbooks”: "What? The professor wants me to read how many pages before the next class and be ready to be tested over all that material? What should I do?" Come to this seminar and learn proven techniques for reading "smarter, not harder"! “Systems of Equations”: Solving systems by substitution will be covered as well s the addition method. Regular problems will be included along with word problems, covering sections 4.2, 4.3, and 4.5. "Tackle That Chapter and Win!": How much do you recall from the chapter you read last night? What were the main ideas? What topics will likely appear on the exam? Bring a textbook, paper, and three pens (black, blue & red) and find out the importance of finding the main idea and making useful chapter notes through textbook highlighting and marking. “Tackling Tests”: Come review effective test preparation, study, and test-taking techniques in preparation for midterms. “That Pesky Punctuation (for ESL Students)”: Proper use of punctuation is essential for written English communication. Improper use can cause confusion and frustration for both the writer and the reader. In this seminar, basic rules of punctuation will be examined and practiced. “TI 83/84 Graphing Calculator”: This seminar will be an overview of both the basic and graphing capabilities of the TI83 and TI-84 graphing calculators. Please bring one of these calculators to the seminar. This seminar will be of interest primarily to Developmental Mathematics and College Algebra students. "Using Library Resources Effectively": In this class, participants will be introduced to the library catalog and techniques on how best to find materials using various search skills. The Libraries' Electronic Resources will also be introduced. “Word Forms for ESL Students”: When should you use the adjective-form of a word? When should you use an infinitive? How can you determine which form of a word you should use in a given sentence? These questions will’ be ANSWERED! Students will be provided guided practice using appropriate word forms and "tricks" in determining which forms to use.
