SELMA HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION SYLLABUS COURSE DESCRIPTION: Selma High School Physical Education Department centers each student around the conceptual framework of the required Lifelong Individualized Fitness Education (LIFE) program mandated by the State of Alabama Course of Study: Physical Education. Physical Education focuses on the teachings of attaining and maintaining a “physically active” lifestyle. This program is designed to reinforce the teaching of Grades K-8 thus spending less emphasis on motor skill activity and more on health-enhancing physical activity. The program also utilizes the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains to enable instructors to conduct evaluations through skill and written assignments. Prerequisite: Students should have completed Physical Education on the Middle School or Junior High School level. Requirements: Daily class attendance, dress-out, and participation Development of movement/sport skills appropriated for the individual study of concepts/competencies in various activities related to the Alabama Course of Study Alabama Governor’s Commission on Physical Fitness, SAT-9 Objectives, and AIP requirements Punctual submission of written assignments Evaluation: Grades for each nine weeks are determined as follows: Class Participation Tests/Quizzes Skills Tests Homework/Written Assignments/Projects Type of Diploma: Standard/Advanced Type of Course: Required/Elective Scholastic Year: 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th Credit Earned: 1 credit for LIFE, ½ credit for Physical Education Quality Points Earned: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0 and F=0 School-Career Connections: Students completing this course will have the background information to understand the importance of incorporating physical activity for lifetime enjoyment. Students will be able to pursue careers in physical education, recreation, health, and other related programs offered in institutions of higher learning or communities. Each student is REQUIRED to dress out and participate. Students are only to wear Selma High Colors (blue, gold, white) with the exception of gray/black…ONLY!! 2. Students who do not dress MUST obtain a written note from parent (which includes a contact number for verification) or a legitimate doctor’s excuse. 3. Students who dress should make sure clothes are labeled. Do not bring or leave valuables in the locker room or gym. We are NOT responsible for stolen items. 4. Female students MUST wear tights underneath their shorts *No bulky jewelry or hoops are to be worn on gym floor or during activity. Male students MUST wear shorts “above” the waist appropriately. *No excessive baggy shorts. ALL students MUST wear appropriate shoes for physical education. *Absolutely no boots, clogs, sandals or dress shoes will be worn on gym floor. 5. The gym is for physical activity. *THERE WILL BE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR THE FOLLOWING: PROFANITY FIGHTING DUNKING IN GOALS EATING DRINKING CELL PHONES, IPODS, MP3 PLAYERS, ETC CARD PLAYING OR ANY SORT OF GAMBLING DISRESPECTFULNESS TOWARDS PEERS, TEACHERS, AND/OR ADMINISTRATION CONSEQUENCES First Offense: Student/Teacher Conference Second Offense: Parent phone call/conference Third Offense: Discipline Referral Selma High School Physical Education Grading Policy/Rubrics Grade Scale Description A 100-90% Student always demonstrates a very high level of understanding fitness/movement concepts, cognitive skills and rules of sports. Student is always prepared and puts forth strong effort in achieving personal/social concepts. B 89-80% Student demonstrates a high level of understanding fitness/movement concepts, cognitive skills and rules of sports. Student is generally prepared and puts forth effort in achieving personal/social concepts. C 79-70% Student demonstrates a moderate level of understanding fitness/movement concepts, cognitive skills and rules of sports. Student is fairly prepared and puts forth some effort in achieving personal/social concepts. D 69-65% Student demonstrates a minimal level of understanding fitness/movement concepts, cognitive skills and rules of sports. Student is rarely prepared and puts forth little effort in achieving personal/social concepts. F 64% and below Student demonstrates no understanding of fitness/movement concepts, cognitive skills and rules of sports. Student is never prepared and puts forth no effort in achieving personal/social concepts. *A student who is not prepared for participation will have the opportunity to earn up to 50% of the daily performance points. The teacher will assign an activity or written assignment to be completed throughout the duration of class.
