Description of Business Environment:
Lockheed Martin (LM) is the prime contractor and Design Authority for the Merlin Mk2
Royal Navy anti-submarine and anti-surface helicopter system. Merlin Capability
Sustainment Programme (MCSP) included technology enhancements to the aircraft
avionics and tactical system, ground preparation/analysis systems, training systems and
support infrastructure. Whilst the base programme is nearing completion LM are working
on a number of follow on enhancements and adjacent programme opportunities such as
the Airborne Early Warning System known as CROWSNEST. Additionally the engineering
team also support new business activities outside the scope of Merlin such as maritime
systems and other opportunities.
We are looking for an experienced Acoustics Systems Engineer to work within the Military
Systems Engineering team. This encompasses the programme life cycle from
requirements generation/derivation, to all aspects of integration, sell-off and support.The

Specific Job Description:
The candidate will act as an Acoustics Cognisant Engineer, and will be responsible for
technical activities assigned from the Project team.
The candidate will work with the Acoustics vendor(s) to ensure that subsystem
specifications and interfaces are correctly interpreted and implemented by the supplier,
and that emergent technical risk, issues and opportunities are communicated back to the
main programme(s). The candidate will also be responsible for assigned system
requirements and the flow down of the requirements to the subsystem, including the
testability of the requirements.
The Acoustics Cognisant Engineer will lead System Requirements Validation activities;
include requisite modelling and simulation activities relating to performance, and interact
with the customer in support of Technical Leadership to gain customer understanding and
buy-in of analysis approach and results.
ASW operations and systems, Acoustics data processing, tracking methodology and
algorithms and ASW modelling experience and knowledge will be required to support this
role.

 Acoustic performance modelling
 Requirements Derivation and Management
 Systems design and interface documentation
 System demonstration and testing
 Support to integration and test
 Scrutinise subcontractor technical submissions
 Undertake assessment of current airborne Acoustic Systems and identify capability
gaps against requirements.
 Technical liaison with customer and supplier stakeholders
 In time, and subject to approval through the Competency Management System (CMS)
take on signatory responsibility for Acoustics System CoD’s and associated work
products (including Flight Approval Documentation and internal DA checklists).
Required Skills:
Essential Experience & Educational Requirements of the role:
 Degree in an engineering discipline or other higher education with equivalent
experience
 Thorough knowledge and significant experience of airborne Acoustic system
architectures and system integration.
 Thorough knowledge and significant experience of Acoustic processing and
performance analysis and modelling.
Desired Skills for the Role:
 The candidate must have proven inter-personal and technical skills and must be able to
work within a small technical team and provide technical expertise and leadership
when required.
 The candidate must be self-starting and capable of working effectively without day to
day supervision under only general direction. Work is reviewed upon completion for
adequacy in meeting objectives.
 The candidate must have strong customer and end user focus and capable of readily
interpreting and influencing Customer thinking
 The candidate should be capable of formulating proposal plans / schedules,
development effort and cost estimates.
 Proven experience with the successful design, implementation, integration, and test of
Dipping Sonar and Sonics based Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Systems
 Able to maintain a balance between attention to detail and gaining an overall
understanding of assigned requirements, functions and design within the wider
programme










Standard Job Description:
Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk,
and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at
all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation,
operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of
customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical,
schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade
studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer
requirements into hardware and software specifications.
Typical Minimum Education & Experience:
Ideally require a Bachelors degree from an accredited college and capability typically
achieved through demonstrable professional experience. Will also consider individuals
with equivalent experience / combined education. Considered an emerging authority
