CURRICULUM POLICY
Statement
Jus‘T’Learn offers a curriculum that is broad and balanced and that reflects the National
Curriculum. All students have the opportunity for GCSE, BTEC and Functional Skills.
Students in Year 10 can follow a two year course that leads to GCSE, some subjects may be
taken in Year 10; students in Year 11 have the opportunity of taking GCSE’s and/or follow a
vocational programme of study.
Students also have the opportunity to access Individual Learning Programmes (ILP) and
Personal Development Programmes (PDP), aimed at supporting students through
bereavement and loss. Our Personal Contribution Curriculum allows students to become
involved in, for example, the Student Council etc. Our students also have the opportunity to
work with a Moving Forward in Life Mentor who provides 1-1 support and small group
support, tailored to individual needs.
Mission Statement
Our Mission statement is: “Building the Pathway to your future”. Every child matters at
Jus‘T’Learn and it is our aim and objective that each child is given the opportunity to develop
through quality teaching.
AIMS OF THE CURRICULUM
The Curriculum of Jus‘T’Learn supports the aims, ethos and values of the school by;





Promoting the intellectual, aesthetic, moral, physical and social development of all
students
Providing opportunities for mentoring in order to make a contribution to the education
of young people
Ensuring that equality of opportunity in access to the curriculum is an entitlement
Ensuring that extra-curricular activities play an important part in school life
Providing students with every opportunity to be happy and successful learners

SMCS Statement: To ensure that all learners show a keen interest in ethical issues.
Pupils to have a very good understanding into their own and others cultures. To appreciate a
cultural diversity and where required to, challenge racism and to engage well with those from
different backgrounds.
The National Curriculum
In addition to supporting the aims, ethos and value of our school, our curriculum meets the
statutory requirements of the Secondary Curriculum (2007) and the three key aims for all
young people; namely that all young people should be:



Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society

Our taught curriculum is delivered through 3 different types of weekly timetable with each
day divided into 4 periods of 50 minutes resulting in approximately 17 hours of teaching per
week. The timing of the day is as follows.

ESOL / Functional Skills Learners
All students are taught Literacy and Numeracy with usage of ICT. In addition they are taught
life skills which enables;




Students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and
understand how they contribute positively to the lives of those living and
working in the locality and to society more widely
Provide students with a broad general knowledge of public institutions and
services in England
To assist students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and
other cultures, in a way that promotes tolerance and harmony between
different cultural traditions.
To encourage the students to respect the fundamental British values of
democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and
tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Years 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4)
The curriculum in Years 10 and 11 gives student some choice to ensure a broad and
balance education. All students follow a common core of subjects and followed by some
bespoke requirements from their mainstream school or from the local authority.
Current (Please note that Jus‘T’Learn can offer additional subjects); these being
French, German, Spanish, Geography, Food Tech, Art, Religious Education, Physical
Education, Business Studies.

In addition to formal taught lessons we do include trips to theatres to support English
Literature and trips to the library.
There will also be culture trips to promote appreciation and respect for their own cultures,
tolerance and harmony between cultures.

Curriculum Planning and Monitoring
It is the responsibility of curriculum and subject leaders to plan and manage the curriculum
and assessment of their subject areas. They report back regularly to the Centre Manager.
An annual, structured curriculum will take place and other key staff to plan the curriculum for
the following year. To ensure that the quality of planning and monitoring meets the needs of
all students.
