Job Summary:
The Program Coordinator, Student Study Skills promotes the academic and professional
development of students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Reporting to the
Manager, Student Learning, this position is accountable for the development, coordination,
promotion and ongoing assessment of programs and instruction designed to enhance learning and
skills and overall student retention and success.
The Program Coordinator, Student Study Skills works in close collaboration with students,
faculty and staff across the university to coordinate and promote the development of effective
study skills among students. The incumbent is also responsible for liaising and building
relationships with alumni and partners within the local community to promote a positive student
experience.
Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
1. Program Development and Coordination
Leads in the ongoing research, development, delivery and coordination of programs and events
to promote the development of effective learning and study skills that is grounded in theory and
research, and designed to address the unique learning and development needs of specific
populations and disciplines. This includes:




Developing and coordinating the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) program to provide
academic assistance for high risk courses focussing on increased student performance and
retention
Working with faculty administrators and faculty members to recruit and hire PASS leaders
Providing high quality training, supervision and evaluation of PASS leaders and providing
ongoing mentoring and education of peer staff in educational and learning strategies
Providing direction for instructional content being delivered through PASS sessions








Identifying target courses and gaining faculty support for new PASS sessions and serving as the
liaison to departmental administrators and faculty members
Overseeing the daily operations and coordination of program activities, securing necessary
materials, scheduling PASS sessions around student timetables, maintaining the program within
established budget guidelines
Performing data collection, documentation and analysis to ensure accurate and timely
development of PASS reports
Regularly communicating the progress, outcomes, and direction of the program to the SLC
Manager and faculty liaisons
Making recommendations concerning improvement of the program and services to SLC
Manager
Promoting the PASS program to current and prospective students, faculty and other
departments at UOIT
Utilizing universal instructional design principles, online platforms and appropriate technologies
to ensure accessible programming standards are maintained
Delivering tutor training in conjunction with other staff in the SLC
2. Academic Development and Support
Provides support and assistance to promote the development of effective learning and study
skills by:




Conducting one-on-one tutoring sessions with graduate and undergraduate students from all
disciplines to develop effective study and learning strategies
Developing, delivering and co-delivering individual and small group instruction in study skills,
time management, effective test taking and organizational skills
Researching best practices and new techniques in learner and educational support
Demonstrating adult learning principles in working with post-secondary students
3. Resource Development
Leads in the development and production of print and online resources to support learning and
study skills development at UOIT by:










Developing tutorial based learning resources and assessment tools for NOOL.ca
Liaising with UOIT faculty to ensure appropriate resources are available for students
Liaising with UOIT library to understand available library resources
Knowledge of Supplemental Instruction principles and practices
Knowledge of study skills and learning strategies for post-secondary students
Experience with curriculum development and project management
Demonstrated understanding postsecondary student development, student learning theories
and their impact on first- and second-year students
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
Demonstrated teaching, listening, writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and high degree of openness to new
approaches and new ideas






Experience working with culturally diverse post-secondary student populations (ESL, special
needs, non-traditional, at-risk, first generation, etc.) and awareness of the issues of these
populations that impact learning
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain supportive effective working relationships with
students, faculty and staff
Graduate degree in Education, Psychology or other appropriate field
3-5 years of experience in implementing and facilitating an academic success program and
teaching
Experienced in group facilitation and mentorship of peer staff
Supervisory or leadership experience in program planning, implementation, training and
evaluation
