Dr. Bleecker provided an overview of the center and its focus on collaborations with an emphasis on population based genomics studies oriented towards large cohort studies. The Genomics Center has a broad reach, with Genomics Center faculty linked to about 25% of the active grants at WFUHS. Dr. Hawkins followed with a report on the specialized services/core technologies that are available within the Genomics Center. The four primary areas include expertise and equipment: (1) DNA sequencing, (2) Genotyping, (3) Gene Expression, and (4) DNA Purification. Please see the attached slides for detailed information about the equipment, scientific application, and contacts. There are extensive research resources available in this area, and we encourage other centers and research faculty to contact Dr. Hawkins to obtain more specific information regarding potential future collaborations. Wake Forest Innovations: Providing Services for Engaging Industry Eric Tomlinson, Chief Innovation Office for WFBMC explained the three core activities/services of Wake Forest Innovations. These include (1) Product Innovation & Commercialization of ideas and inventions, (2) Contract Research and Development Services for commercializing research capabilities and assets, and (3) Wake Forest Innovation Quarter which encompasses the development of the research park and entrepreneurship. Wake Forest Innovations promotes product innovation through the internal commercialization pathway financial awards and the CHA Health System bidirectional agreement. The enterprise also is engaged in marketing and contracting research & development services and in the marketing and commercialization of proprietary technologies. Please contact Wake Forest Innovations if you have an interest in expanding center products and/or specialized research & development services with industry partners (wakeheath.edu intranet: innovations). The Innovation Quarter is the fastest growing urban research park in the United States and promotes achieving harmony between working and living through a myriad of services as it seeks develop 145 acres in downtown Winston-Salem into a hub for innovation in medical science and information technology.
