Strategic Initiatives and Engagement
Associate Vice President for Health Sciences reporting to the Vice President for Health Sciences
with operational responsibility for all academic administrative units to advance the academic
and social missions of Virginia Commonwealth University. Responsibilities include:
participation in school and departmental accreditation reviews; representation of the Vice
President for Health Sciences with the Provost’s Office and other university entities;
measurement of strategic academic goals, objectives and reporting requirements of VCU Health
Sciences. Also, serves as the principal academic officer with responsibilities for assessment and
development of policies and procedures associated with academic support programs, including
diversity initiatives, space and facilities, human resources, strategic planning, disability services,
and compliance.
Division for Health Sciences Diversity
Responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership in the development and
implementation of student and campus climate initiatives to advance institutional diversity
efforts. Core responsibilities involve oversight of a campus-wide Health Sciences and Health
Careers Pipeline initiative; leading six full-time administrative faculty and staff, developing and
managing a departmental budget, assisting with the development and submission of grants,
and developing partnerships with community and professional organizations. Additional
responsibilities include representing the university at the local, statewide, and national levels,
and presenting on diversity topics at higher education institutions and community-based
organizations.
Division for Academic Success
Responsible for providing strategic leadership for the Division for Academic Success in offering
comprehensive support for health profession students with disabilities. Core responsibilities
include leading five full-time faculty and staff, providing consultation and approval on highimpact budget, procurement, and contractual activities.

Scope of appointment entails co-chairing the university’s Equity and Diversity Committee;
implementation of the university’s 5-year Diversity Plan; providing oversight of academic and
administrative unit diversity plan processes; management of diversity-related communications

operational budget, assisting with the development and submission of external grants,
coordinating collaborative efforts related to marketing, data collection, and program
evaluation. Additional responsibilities included serving on various VCU Committees and
assisting with internal management of the Division.

Co-Director, VCU School of Dentistry Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Dental Pipeline and
Practice Initiative. Responsibilities included assisting with the development of enrichment
program curriculum and program evaluation. Specific duties include development and

learning and reading skills assessments, and implementation of a program evaluation and
tracking strategies.

 Co-Deputy Director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Summer Medical and
Dental Education Program (SMDEP) Responsibilities included oversight of 12 national
medical and dental school program sites. Responsibilities include development and
management of a $950K budget, which included managing a $200K subcontract to the
American Dental Education Association. Budget responsibilities also included monitoring
budget revisions and reporting for the 12 national SMDEP sites. Also, responsible for the
supervision of three senior staff/research associates and five support staff; with oversight of
the national evaluation, marketing, and strategic planning efforts for the program.
 Division Project Leader for the AAMC national marketing campaign – AspiringDocs.org.
Responsibilities included developing the division’s implementation plan and reporting
mechanisms for internal and external stakeholders, presenting program goals and
objectives to top level university officials (Presidents, Deans, Vice Provosts), and
coordinating the development and implementation of pilot program activities at four

 Division Operations Team Leader: Responsibilities included coordinating the activities of
division staff in developing and monitoring operational policies on behalf of the division’s
Vice President.
 Division Web Team Leader. Responsibilities included coordinating the activities of division
staff in developing and monitoring the division’s web pages. Also, included working closely
with the division’s Vice President to integrate the division’s web presence within the overall
organization’s web promotion initiatives.
 Division Policy and Management Team member. Charged with assisting the division’s Vice
President in managing staff and fiscal resources to effectuate the division’s strategic
mission. Other responsibilities included participating in the development and
implementation of the division’s strategic plan and participating on the organization’s
management staff group.

Responsible for full production of quarterly newsletters to include determining issue focus,
contributors, coordinating editing, production, and distribution activities.
Served as Assistant Director for the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s
Award Competition
Responsibilities included day-to-day operation of program activities, which included
developing and executing national promotions campaign and full coordination of the
proposal evaluation process.
Other division responsibilities include the production of a biennial publication and
responding to constituent requests for information related to minority affairs issues.
