THE LION KING AUDITIONS SEPTEMBER 28TH& 30TH AND OCTOBER 1ST & 2ND ALL AUDITION FORMS NEED TO BE TURNED INTO THE SCHOOL FRONT OFFICE BY SEPTEMBER 19TH September 28th – Leads 5th grade and Stage Crew September 30th – Grades 2nd and 3rd October 1st – Leads 4th Grade and 4th & 5th Grade Chorus October 2nd – Kindergarten & 1st and Callbacks AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD IN THE MUSIC ROOM BY THE GYM. (Cast lists will be posted no later October 10th) We are looking forward to another great production this year. The Lion King is full of amazing African animals from the fierce lionesses, wild hyenas and charging wildebeests to the beautiful Kenya Sky Dancers and Serengeti Singers. Join us as we learn African chants, create cool tribal masks and bring the safari of Africa to the Mountain Park Drama Club. This is a voluntary extra-curricular activity run by parent volunteers. We welcome and strongly encourage your participation. K – 3rd Grades These young actors will audition with a small group of their peers and will be asked to sing a familiar song, i.e., Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. They will also be asked their name and to answer a few questions. We want this to be a positive and fun experience for the kids. We ask for your patience and will do our best run the auditions on schedule. Child Pick-up Times: K-1st at 3:20p.m. 2nd Grade: 3:30p.m. 3rd Grade – Have your child go home their regularly scheduled way, then come back at 3:30 for auditions. They should be finished by 4:15p.m 4TH AND 5TH Grades Leads: Please come prepared to sing a song a cappella and read lines for the specific role you are auditioning for. We strongly encourage you to prepare a song. Actors that are not prepared will be auditioned for a chorus role. NO EXCEPTIONS. Actors trying out for lead roles will be emailed a sample of the script to rehearse, after we receive your audition packet. It is not necessary to memorize, only become familiar with the lines for expression. Talent as well as reliability, personal conduct and commitment to the production are all variables considered as we select the lead roles. Auditions are time intensive so please reschedule other commitments that day. You will be notified of a callback via email, not all roles will have a callback. 4th & 5th Grade Chorus Groups: Please come Thursday, 10/1 at 3:30 5th grade leads – please come directly after school on Monday the 9/28 4th grade leads – please come directly after school on Thursday 10/1 STAGE CREW: Will be interviewed Monday, 9/28 at 3:30, by the Art Director CHORUS GROUPS K-5TH GRADES Chorus groups will perform a song and dance in a group made up of 8-20 kids. You will find the song that will be performed, rehearsal day and grade level for the specific group. We may add a chorus group and song not listed based upon the number of children auditioning. We will make every effort to keep your child on the same anticipated rehearsal day listed below. Make sure that the rehearsal days fit with your family’s schedule prior to having your child audition. Roles will not be changed once the play is cast. This character needs to be larger than life as it commands the stage calling in the animals of the Prideland and guiding Simba to his calling as King of the Pridelands. VERY strong singer! SOLOS: The Circle of Life and He Lives in You. SINGERS SERENGETI– This group of singers needs to be strong, focused and ready to be on stage A LOT! They will be in more musical numbers than anyone else in the show. They will keep the show alive with the music and some dancing. MUFASA – A Lion King! This character has a big presence as king and Simba’s father. Good singing voice, will have solos and speaking parts. SOLO: They Live in You. SARABI – A lioness, queen of the Pridelands and Simba’s mother. Has key speaking lines and will need to be an actor who can deliver the role as queen and mother of Simba. ZAZU - Is a busy, detailed and loyal assistant to Mufasa. Zazu is a comedic fun character that speaks his/her solo parts in the music. SCAR – Is the villain of the show. Needs to be a dramatic actor that can portray a plotting, jealous brother to Mufasa. He is coldhearted, intelligent and will stop and nothing to become king of the Pridelands. We need a strong ACTOR! Scar sings “Be Prepared”. Young Simba – This role is an adventurous and endearing young cub who can’t wait to be king. Simba is playful and energetic, but after his father’s Mufasa’s death he struggles. This role needs a STRONG singer and dynamic fun performer. Young Simba sings, “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and Hakuna Matata”. ( we will consider younger performers for this role 2nd grade and up, will need to try out with a solo audition on lead day) SIMBA – Grows from a cub to lion. Older Simba has more challenging acting moments as he reunites with Nala and the other Lions and confronts Scar. He sings a solo in “Hakuna Matatas, part II”. LIONESSES – Are the fierce hunters of the Pridelands. These need to be really strong singers and actors and dancers. They sing three songs, “The Lioness Hunt”, “Shadowland” and the “Mourning”. YOUNG NALA – Is a courageous lion cub. She is young Simba’s best friend. Nala does not sing solos,, but does need to be a strong performer! NALA – Nala grows from a cub to a lioness before she confronts Scar and goes to search for Simba. This role needs a mature, strong actress. Nala sings a beautiful solo, “Shadowland”. SARAFINA – Nala’s mother needs to be caring and nurturing. Has a short speaking part, but will be part of the lionesses. Needs to be a strong singer. Hard working actor and leader of the lionesses. BANZAI – Is a slick, childish hyena who works for Scar. This role needs a confident, outgoing actor who can be nasty and gruff. Banzai is always with his two side kicks, Shenzi and Ed. Needs to be able to laugh crazy and loud. SHENZI – One of Scar’s hyenas that does his dirty work to take over the Prideland. Shenzi is the sassy one that is always looking out for her/himself. Needs a big personality and have a crazy wild laugh. ED – Scar’s third hyena. This hyena can be played by a boy or a girl, but must have a fun personality that is not afraid to act silly or goofy on stage. Ed’s only communication is his/her laughter and crazy expressions. TIMON – Is a meerkat that lives in the jungle with Pumba. This actor must have a fun, big personality that can make people laugh. Timon is the funniest character in the show and needs to be played by a charismatic actor. This character can be played by a boy or a girl. Cannot be shy on stage. Needs an actor that makes people laugh with their body language, expressions and delivery of their lines. Sings “Hakuna Matata with Pumba. PUMBA – Is a kind hearted, sensitive warthog who enjoys life. Can be a boy or a girl that is loveable, funny and has comedic timing with his buddy Timon. Pumba has funny lines and jokes and needs to be able to deliver them to the audience in a playful fun way. This role needs a comedian that is not afraid to act on stage and be goofy, a great actor. Sings “Hakuna Matata” with Timon. Mountain Park Elementary School Drama Club is pleased to announce our 2015 performance of, THE LION KING, February 26TH & 27TH, 2015 Auditions will be held the week of Sept 28TH. There will be a parent meeting on October 14th , for grades K-2 and another parent meeting October 15th for grades 3-5, at 3:30 in the gym. The first rehearsal will be October 20TH. Attendance Policy: Leads MUST be available all rehearsal days. Student must attend all rehearsals & all performances at The Milton Center during production week. 3 absences from rehearsals without an excuse (either email or note), may lead to dismissal from the production. LEADS WILL NEED TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE DIRECTOR ON ANY ABSENCES. Discipline Policy: First incident, we will talk to the parent that picks up the child about the incident and they will need to sign a form that they have been told about the incident. Second time, the parent will be notified about the incident and the parent will need to shadow their child during the next rehearsal. The child will not be allowed to return to the next rehearsal without a parent. A third incident, the child will have to leave the production. Drama Club Rules: Come to rehearsal with script, music and pencil as needed for your role. Be ready to work during rehearsal! This is time to work on your lines, songs, dances and sets. Practice at home- practice with the CD and have your parents read lines with you and show them your dances. At all times you must stay with your group. Bring your own snack. Food must always be eaten in the hallway. RESPECT! Respect ALL VOLUNTEERS, your cast mates & yourself. That includes being quiet when others are performing. Other Important Information: We will provide updated information and schedules through the Drama Club link on the MPE website. Chorus Groups have a non-refundable fee of $30 that includes the costume & music CD (1 per family) Leads have a non-refundable fee of $50 that includes their costume (s), their script and rehearsal CD. Children who arrive for rehearsal when they are not scheduled will be sent to the office to call home. We will take them back to their program when rehearsal is finished. Rehearsals may run slightly longer and as we draw closer to show time. If there are any necessary changes, I will give you as much notice as possible.
