NETWORKING WORKS!
RIVALRY ON THE RIVERS
Alumni and
student
connections are
resulting in realworld
opportunities,
namely jobs.
Keaton Ley
Sarah Spearing
Recently, a group
of students travelled to an alumni networking
event sponsored by the regional alumni chapter
in Washington, D.C. During the speednetworking event, similar to speed dating, they
had five minutes to learn a little bit about each
other. Many connections were made during the
event, and at least two resulted in jobs at Tate &
Tryon, a public accounting and consulting firm
serving nonprofit organizations. Seniors Keaton
Ley and Sarah Spearing met RJ Martucci ’06
and Ethan Ellenberger ’09. Both Martucci and
Ellenberger work for Tate & Tryon, and they
connected the students with Doug Boedecker
’92 and Debbie Strausbaugh ’09, who also
work for the company. After a number of
interviews, both Ley and Spearing were offered
positions at the company. Spearing describes her
experience by saying, “I think that more students
should take advantage of these types of
networking opportunities. Even just asking for
advice or getting a second look at a resume is
great.” In fact, Sarah attributes getting an
interview to the advice she received from
another alumnus, Patrick McElroy '07, on
revising her resume.
Beginning Feb. 1, alumni in the classes of 2000 to
2010 will have the chance to challenge Juniata
College alumni for the title of Best University on the
River. The school with the most donors after 100
days wins. Make a gift of any size between Feb. 1
and May 11, and you’ll bring Susquehanna one step
closer to taking the title.
If you’d like to help current students find jobs or
internships, or polish up their résumés, e-mail
Becky Deitrick. Or, if you are in need of career
support, let us know, and we will connect you to
the Susquehanna network. You can also search
for career connections under the Career Help
The school with the most donors by May 11 wins
$100,000, generously donated by an anonymous
donor from the winning school. You will soon
receive a postcard in the mail with more details.

DID YOU KNOW?
Susquehanna University is one of the best values
among private colleges, according to Kiplinger’s
Personal Finance magazine. The university is
ranked among the top 100 liberal arts colleges
and private universities in the nation that
Kiplinger’s credits with delivering high-quality
education at an affordable price.
Kiplinger's annually ranks the best values in
private colleges based on a variety of quality,
cost and financial-aid measures. The criteria
include student-faculty ratios, admission and
retention rates, and on-time graduation rates, in
addition to cost and the amount of financial aid
that is available. Academic quality counts for
about two-thirds of the ranking score.
The annual Kiplinger’s rankings appeared in the
December 2010 issue and are available online.
