A landmark year for GBPA!
President’s Message
What a difference a year makes!
If you didn’t make it to our Annual
Dinner during Remembrance Day
Weekend, you missed a great
performance by Patrick Falci, portraying
his role as General A. P. Hill from the
movie ‘Gettysburg.’
In December, our volunteers (and
almost 300 visitors) braved a snowstorm
to tour the festively-decorated Lady
farmhouse as part of the Gettysburg Bed
and Breakfast Holiday House Tour.
But, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!
One year ago, we were planning a
couple events at the Daniel Lady Farm.
This year, it’s a whole different story.
There will be events at the farm every
weekend during the summer, including
special activities over the Memorial Day
and Labor Day weekends.
Improvements to the farm continue on
top of 2013’s projects of native tree and
orchard plantings, rustic fencing and the
period-correct wood covering over the
cinderblock utility building.
Volunteers have been painting like
crazy at the farm and sprucing the place
up like never before.
The Gettysburg Licensed Town
Historians now conduct their guided
tours out of our headquarters storefront
at 33 York Street.
This summer, were going to have our
first-ever general membership picnic and
meeting.
Greatest of all, the Daniel Lady
Farm is about to become the
foremost living history site in
Gettysburg.
The exciting details on this,
and more, are
inside!
There is preliminary information inside
this newsletter, but watch for details in a
big announcement.
GBPA continues its commitment to
make Gettysburg even better!

Announcing:
The American Living History Education Center
at the Daniel Lady Farm
The board of trustees has approved plans for the establishment of the American Living History
Education Center.
Details, including timetables, are still being worked out, but within the next few weeks, the GBPA
will hold a news conference to announce the project.
It had been the hope of the GBPA to acquire the farm, restore the house and barn, and turn it over
to the Gettysburg National Military Park. However, a number of factors, especially the bare-bones funding
of the National Park Service, assures that any turnover to the GNMP is many, many years off, if ever.
Properly maintaining the Daniel Lady Farm as a gem of preservation requires that we increase its
attraction to the visiting public. The board of trustees believes that can be achieved by enhancing the
farm’s ability to cover the entire scope of American history.
Different sections of the farm will be designated to house living
history encampments
from the colonial period
through the 20th
Century, including the
French and Indian War,
the Revolution, the Civil
War and World Wars I
and II. A corral area is
planned to allow horses
to be used during
events.
One of the
foremost features will
be the creation of a historic
tradesmen village featuring
artisans of the 18th and 19th
centuries demonstrating their
crafts.
Only small, moveable
wooden structures and tents
will be used at the Education
Center. There are no intentions
for the erection of permanent
structures.
The plan is being formulated through the cooperation of the GBPA and the American Living
History Education Society.
The GBPA’s emphasis for the future will be directed exclusively to public education and the
preservation of Gettysburg’s hallowed ground, and we expect the Education Center to become one of
Gettysburg's must-see attractions.

Licensed Gettysburg Town Historians Join GBPA at 33 York Street
The Gettysburg Licensed Town Historians have teamed with GBPA, and have begun operating out
of our storefront/headquarters at 33 York Street.
The historians offer a 1 1/2 hour licensed guided walking tour of downtown Gettysburg and its
historical role in the Battle of Gettysburg and its aftermath.
The historians are Gerry Eak, Jerry LaRussa, Elaine
Leslie, Jane Malone, John McTague, Linda Mixer, Tom
Rutherford, Kevin Serensits and Lisa Seamon.
The move to the GBPA storefront was the culmination of
two years of negotiations spurred by GBPA board member and
former president Brendan Synnamon.
Thanks to the move, several thousand more visitors
every year will be made aware of the GBPA and our work. The
revenue from increased traffic, sales and memberships at the
headquarters will make this venture much to our advantage.
The historians wasted no time becoming familiarized
with the role of the Daniel Lady Farm in the epic battle by
attending an in-depth tour of the farm with GBPA board of trustees member Ray Davis.

“Oooooh, look!”
No, she doesn’t see a ghost. Teri Vogelsong Coe is pointing out the two authors who were at the
Daniel Lady farmhouse on March 8 to sign their books and talk history as part of American History and
Reenactors Appreciation Weekend in Gettysburg.
Bob O’Conner, right, is the author of numerous
works, including “The Amazing Legacy of James E. Hanger,
Civil War Soldier.” Ron Zeitz, left, penned the recently –
published novel, ”Blockade Runner.”
Daniel Lady Farm regularly open to public.
The Daniel Lady Farm is now open for tours 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday.
The buildings had been open on special occasions, but the new hours mark the first time they’re
accessible on a regular basis. GBPA President Barb
Mowery credits the growing involvement of the
American Living History Educational Society with
ensuring volunteers familiar with the Lady Farm and its
history are on hand for the weekend hours.
“Establishing regular tour hours for the
farmhouse and barn is a major step forward for GBPA,”
said Mowery. “The
farm can become
part of the itinerary for visitors to Gettysburg. The farm tours offer an
even more comprehensive interpretation of the events of July 1863
and their impact on the soldiers and civilians involved.”
Visitors touring the house are asked for a $5 donation. A
similar fee is expected to be established for the barn.
We also operate a storefront at 33 York Street in Gettysburg
which helps to provide funding for the many farm projects and is a
great place to start or conclude a Daniel Lady Farm tour.

Annual Meeting Caps Successful Anniversary Year
Four members were elected to the Board of Trustees at the annual GBPA dinner meeting on Nov. 22,
bringing the board to the full 15-member complement allowed under the
by-laws.
Long-time GBPA volunteer Raymond J. Davis of New Oxford, Adams
County, is a new face on the panel. Incumbents Diane Forgett of
Gettysburg and Harry Sonntag of Philadelphia were re-elected to serve
three-year terms. Robert Hanrahan, Jr. of Philadelphia was re-elected to
a one-year term.
For 2013’s 150th anniversary of the battle, we honored actor Patrick
Falci, who appeared in the motion picture “Gettysburg.” Falci continues
to make appearances at Civil War reenactments and
related events to provide educational insight into the
Battle of Gettysburg, the Union and Confederate
armies and the leaders of the North and South.
Falci was presented with GBPA’s award for
outstanding public education and preservation of the
legacy of Gettysburg.
Volunteer of the Year
Member Lorraine Helen Bradley was honored as
GBPA Volunteer of the Year for 2013 for her work at
events at the Daniel Lady Farm and her amazing transformation of our storefront at 33 York Street in
Gettysburg that opened last June.
President Barb Mowery gave the
annual report on our 2013
projects and activities and plans
for the coming year. Highlights of
GBPA’s 150th anniversary
activities included the largestever Confederate field hospital
living history followed weeks
later by a living history event that
focused on the aftermath of the
Lorraine Helen Bradley
battle, its impact on area
residents and the care of the
wounded and dying soldiers after the armies moved on.
Mowery also outlined GBPA finances and the status of grant and endowment projects in which we are
involved.
Officer elections
At its January 2014 reorganization meeting, the board of trustees reelected Barbara Mowery as
president, Stephen R. Reed as administrative vice-president and Kirk Davis as operations vice-president.
Diana Forgett was elected secretary and Teri Coe is the new treasurer.

By-laws change means two vice-presidents
With the greatly expanded range of programs, facilities, events and projects of the GBPA, the
Board of Trustees, at the January meeting, amended the by-laws to provide for two vice-presidents – one
for administration and the other to oversee the physical operations of the organization.
For decades prior to this change, only one vice-president position existed.
In the absence or incapacity of the president, the administrative vice-president steps in. In the
event both the president and administrative vice-president are unable to serve, the operations vicepresident would serve as president.

Scouts score touché fencing at Lady Farm
-7-
When members of Boy Scout Troop 252 from Philadelphia camped on the Lady Farm over the last weekend in
November, they completed not one, but two BSA-sanctioned Eagle Scout Projects.
Eagle Scout candidates Brandon Welsh and Nick Birkbeck, along with fellow scouts from Troop 252 and their
Scoutmaster, Asst. Scoutmasters (Including GBPA Board Member Harry Sonntag), and parents, completed the
installation of 140 ft. of hand-made, period correct wooded fencing installed in the front of and sides of the Lady
farmhouse.
In addition, scouts installed post and rail fencing around a driveway across the street from the barn and planted
a 19th century Apple orchard. The troop made a financial donation to the GBPA and also donated a special lighting
fixture to be used in the barn for presentations.
In addition to adding to the period presentation of the house and barn, the fences perform as safety devices by
discouraging visitors from crossing Hanover Road at other than designated crossings.
The boys will return to the farm in April to spend a weekend touring the Gettysburg battlefield.

VENTURE CREW 1861
Field Music 1st PRVC
The GBPA’s own Civil War fife and drum corps is entering their
10th year as a Boy Scout band. The group is now rechartered for the
second year by the GBPA as Venture Crew 1861 with the New Birth of
Freedom Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Venture Crew 1861 Fife and Drum Corps portrays the Field Music
of the 1st Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserves Volunteer Corps also
known by its federal designation as the 30th Pennsylvania Volunteers.
The crew number is significant because 1861 is the year Governor
Andrew Curtin and the Pennsylvania Legislature formed the Regiment
with volunteers from Adams, York, Lancaster and surrounding
counties--many of the same counties where many of today’s Venture
Crew live.
The musicians perform at many GBPA and associated events,
including the Preservation Ball, the Civil War Collectables Show,
activities at the Daniel Lady Farm, the Annual Dinner and several
battle reenactments.
The Venture Crew is co-ed and accepts youth ages 13-20 that have
completed 8th grade. Musicians do not have to be Venture Crew age
to participate in the Fife & Drum Corps. The Fife & Drum Corps
accepts youth members aged 11 to 21. Members pay dues and event
fees to cover operating costs.

Daniel Lady Farm fact -- February 21 marked 61 years since
Rosa Ann Lady Kline died in Los Angeles, California. She was the
youngest of Daniel and Rebecca Lady's children, born on January 29,
1865. She married a farmer, Newton Wharton Kline, in 1887, moved
to Kansas and eventually ended up in Los Angeles. She had 4
children -- 3 boys and 1 girl, and her L.A. address is on the 1940 US
Census.
Rosa has not been one of the easier Lady family members to track
down, but her story is an interesting one. She was alive for the very
end of the Civil War, the Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, and
Korea. She would have seen the invention of flight, rural
electrification, the automobile, radio and television! What a time to
be alive! -- by Ray Davis
