1. Welcome!
Welcome! 9th grade English is the first of four English classes needed to receive a high school diploma. You will be
administered a semester long curriculum covering essential elements that will positively impact growth in future English
courses; most importantly, you will learn vital information needed for post secondary education. My objective: to be fully
committed and introduce a curriculum both challenging and insightful to facilitate mastery level growth.

 SSR 50 minutes

Guidelines and Rules
Students will be held accountable to posted rules/guidelines and policies in student handbook.
Students will follow given instructions to complete the course work in the given timeline.
General school/classroom rules, and expectations will be enforced.

Grade 9 expectations:
 Students will be mandated to write at a writing level that reflects SBAC.
 Student will be mandated to complete four or more types of essays: Informational, argumentative,
compare and contrast, or personal narrative essay.
 Students will be mandated to execute well-thought out essays: thesis/claim statement, topic
sentence, evidence, and multiple sources relevant to the given reading.
 Student will also complete ONE chosen novel per semester.
 Student will adhere to the fundamental expectations of an ELA classroom with college expectancy
requirements: speaking & listening, reading, writing, language, and independence

How to succeed in Mr. Flores’s class
 Come into class in an orderly fashion (quiet and ready to learn).
 Take out all materials and immediately begin Do-Now!
 All electronic devices must be put away for the entire period.
 During direct instruction your UNDIVIDED attention/ participation is
necessary.
 Remain PRODUCTIVE during independent/collaborative work.
 Become organized and accountable for your effort.
 Understand this is a LEARNING environment.
How to not succeed in Mr. Flores’s class
 By doing the opposite of the above mentioned items.
 Simon Technology students have the right to a safe and orderly
