Welcome! Welcome! 9th grade English is the first of four English classes needed to receive a high school diploma. You will be administered a semester long curriculum covering essential elements that will positively impact growth in future English courses; most importantly, you will learn vital information needed for post secondary education. My objective: to be fully committed and introduce a curriculum both challenging and insightful to facilitate mastery level growth. 2. Time Commitment: 5 hrs. Class time SSR 50 minutes Homework 5. Grading Policy Your grade will include a combination of exit slips, classwork, and essays. 3. Daily Schedule: Look at student handbook or posted schedule 6. Materials Paper, pencil/pen, and notebook 4. Expectations: Be prompt. Be prepared. Be respectful. Be focused. 7. Alliance schools Grading Scale A – Advanced – 3.40 to 4.00 B – Proficient – 2.70 to 3.39 C – Basic – 2.00 to 2.69 NP – Below/far below basic – 1. 99 and below Guidelines and Rules Students will be held accountable to posted rules/guidelines and policies in student handbook. Students will follow given instructions to complete the course work in the given timeline. General school/classroom rules, and expectations will be enforced. Consequences -Verbal Praise/redirection -Call Home (good/bad) -Possible gift -Warning -Seat Change -Real talk -Conference with teacher/parent/administrator -Removal from class/ Referral to Administration Grade 9 expectations: Students will be mandated to write at a writing level that reflects SBAC. Student will be mandated to complete four or more types of essays: Informational, argumentative, compare and contrast, or personal narrative essay. Students will be mandated to execute well-thought out essays: thesis/claim statement, topic sentence, evidence, and multiple sources relevant to the given reading. Student will also complete ONE chosen novel per semester. Student will adhere to the fundamental expectations of an ELA classroom with college expectancy requirements: speaking & listening, reading, writing, language, and independence School Learning Contract If you’re not being challenged, then what is the point? How to succeed in Mr. Flores’s class Come into class in an orderly fashion (quiet and ready to learn). Take out all materials and immediately begin Do-Now! All electronic devices must be put away for the entire period. During direct instruction your UNDIVIDED attention/ participation is necessary. Remain PRODUCTIVE during independent/collaborative work. Become organized and accountable for your effort. Understand this is a LEARNING environment. How to not succeed in Mr. Flores’s class By doing the opposite of the above mentioned items.
