Devils Post Piles: What? Where? How?
Is located near Mammoth Mountain in extreme northeastern Madera County in eastern
California. It was established in 1911, and protects Devils Postpile, an unusual formation
of columnar basalt.

is a monolithic igneous intrusion or volcanic neck located in the Black Hills near Hulett
and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River.

Caldera: What? How formed?
a cauldron-like volcanic feature usually formed by the collapse of land following a
volcanic eruption, such as the one at Yellowstone National Park in the US.
Lava Plateau: What? How Formed?
is a plateau produced by volcanic activity. There are two main types: lava plateaus and
pyroclastic plateaus. Lava plateaus are formed by highly fluid (runny) basaltic lava during
numerous successive eruptions through numerous vents without violent explosions
(quiet eruptions). Pyroclastic volcanic plateaus are produced by massive pyroclastic
flows and they are underlain by pyroclastic rocks: agglomerates, tephra, volcanic ashes
cemented into tuffs, mafic or felsic.

fed by underlying mantle that is anomalously hot compared with the mantle elsewhere .
