NZWiL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MĀORI AND PASIFIKA WOMEN
The NZWiL Programme has envisaged, since its inception in 2007, that the NZWiL
participant group needs to reflect the diversity of eligible academic and general staff across
the participant universities. Māori and Pasifika women are equity groups which are underrepresented in both academic and general staff roles and at senior leadership levels. Whilst
there has been a small number of participants from these equity groups at the NZWiL
Programmes it has been suggested by NZWiL Alumni that these equity groups would benefit
from an increased focus on encouraging improved participation.
The NZWiL Steering Group established, in 2011, two scholarships for each NZWiL
programme, for these equity groups. The scholarships are partially funded by the NZWiL
Programme which is co-ordinated by the NZWiL Steering Group. The NZWiL Programme is
endorsed by Universities New Zealand - Te Pôkai Tara.
Purpose
To improve equity outcomes for the Māori and Pasifika women equity groups.
To further reflect the diversity of eligible future leaders in academic and general staff roles.
To encourage and assist increased participation of Māori and Pasifika women in the NZWiL
programmes, from individual institutions.
Criteria
Māori and Pasifika women in academic or senior general staff positions who are in or aspire
to be in leadership positions in NZ universities.
The basis for selection will be:
 demonstrated cultural participation in Māori or Pasifika contexts
 iwi affiliations and/or origins are from an indigenous Pacific people
 the ability and/or potential to demonstrate leadership
and
 the individual’s motivation to participate and contribute to the programme and upon
their return to their institution.
Funding
NZWiL will fund $3,000+GST towards the cost of the programme fee. The University of the
successful nominee are to fund the remaining $2,000+GST of programme fees and arrange
and cover the cost of travel to and from Wellington, as required. Accommodation and costs
associated with programme activities are funded by NZWiL.
Selection Process
There are two scholarships available for each NZWiL Programme in 2012.
Note: These places are in addition to the two nominations already being sought from each
university. Where there are more than two nominees for the two scholarships a NZWiL
selection panel will make the final decision on the nominees to be awarded the scholarships.
The panel of three will comprise the Chair of the NZWiL Steering Group, Professor Sarah
Todd or their nominee and our NZWiL Advisors, Dr. Di McCarthy – Chief Executive of the
Royal Society of New Zealand and Dr. Judy McGregor – EEO Commissioner from the
Human Rights Commission.
