Mijn titel: "Constructing Progress in Philosophy"
Voorlopige abstract:
This paper has three parts. First, I argue that progress in philosophy as we kind of
understand it today was invented in the eighteenth century by philosophers that wished (a)
to appeal to the authority of Newton's science to end debate within philosophy (on certain
topics) and (b) to promote a conception of scientific philosophy that proved alluring to some
later philosophers even subsequent the split between science and philosophy. Second, I reexamine some (closely related) narratives of progress within analytical philosophy; i will
focus on the fate of metaphysics.
Third, I conclude my presentation with some reflection on the cost(s) of embracing progress
in philosophy as a regulative ideal in light of the cases that I have described.
