242 MDS – Oral Diagnosis I
2 Credit hours (Lecture = 1, Clinic = 1)
Course description and objectives:
The course is two credit hours. The purpose of this course is to expose
the dental student to basic general knowledge related to learn how to
communicate with the patients and interview them. The student will gain
knowledge of normal extra oral and intra oral structures, assessment of general
appraisal and mental status and know common signs and symptoms of diseases.
It is designed to provide a guide to know appropriate way to perform clinical
examination, understand and assess the patient’s problem. The course will also
introduce some medical and dental terminology. The first lecture will deal with
history taking & interviewing of the patient. Subsequently, clinical examination
along with normal structures, investigations & treatment plan. At the same time,
student will practice clinically those steps.
Specific Educational Objectives:
The main goal of this course is to learn how to approach, take history &
examine the patient in the proper way and form a treatment plan. By the end of
the semester student should be able to:
1. Communicate with the patient correctly & properly and fill the patient’s file.
2. Be able to take general and oral health history and ask the appropriate
questions as suggested by the signs & symptoms.
3. Perform extra-oral

4. Order or do the diagnostic procedures suggested by the history or
examination.
5. Recognize any abnormality in oral and perioral tissues and describe them.
6. Recognize the need for medical or land dental referral or consultation.
7. Develop appropriate treatment plant for patient.

Clinical Evaluation:
Simulated and actual clinical situations will be implemented in this course. The
student must be able to perform the clinical aspect of the course [such as clinical
examination of the patient]. Students will be assessed in all clinical assignment
through discussion and clinical competency. These assessments will also include
knowledge level and attitude.
