History 112-J70 United States History Since 1877 Course Syllabus Mrs. Leevia Barnett Fall 2015 Winchester High School e-mail: lbarnett@winchester.k12.il.us phone: 217-742-3151 office hours: Advisory/6.5 hour Required Texts Visions of America, Keene, et al Combined Volume, First Edition Other Readings None Catalog Description This course is a continuation of History 111 and surveys such topics as industrialization and urbanization's impact upon American society; World War I; the Depression; The New Deal; World War II; the Cold War; and modern domestic problems such as racism, sexism, and the crisis in confidence. We will focus on social, political, economic, and diplomatic aspects of America's last 140 years. Through lectures, the text, other online primary source readings, you will gain a better appreciation for the trends and issues that have driven the progress of this country. A better appreciation of the past will help you be more prepared to analyze and respond to the situations of the present. Student Learning Outcomes Identify the major historical figures, institutions and events in the Gilded Age, Progressive Era, World War I, Great Depression and New Deal, World War II and the Cold War. Interpret historical sources from post-Civil War American history, including government documents, literature and journalistic accounts. Analyze the impact of mass immigration, urbanization, industrialization and corporatization on American society and culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Discuss the origins, nature and impact of the various reform movements in post-Civil War American history, particularly the reforms of the Progressive Era, the New Deal and the 1960s and 1970s. Examine the various factors that led to the Cold War and the impact of the Cold War on both the US and the world in general. Course Requirements Students will be required to complete all of the assigned readings by the day they are listed. Students are also encouraged to participate in classroom discussion that accompanies daily lecture. While questions are welcomed during the lecture period, participation in lecture sections is a privilege and should be treated as such. Disruptions of class and other unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated. Attendance is mandatory and is part of student’s grade. The instructor reserves the right to remove any students from class who are uncooperative with following classroom procedures. All cellular phones must be left at the front of the room during class. Grading for the Course A = 90% and above B = 80% to 89% C = 70% to 79% D = 60% to 69% Weekly Papers: 100 points each Attendance/Classroom Discussion/LabWork Completion and Participation Grade:50 points/week History 112 Presentation/Project: 400 points Mid-term Examination: 300 points Final Examination: 400 points Changes The instructor reserves the right to modify the syllabus as deemed in the best interest of the students and instructor. Students will receive timely notice of all such changes via announcements made in class.
