Keynote Speaker: LINDA PASTAN is a nationally
acclaimed poet who has been compared to Robert
Frost and praised by May Sarton. She grew up in
New York City, graduated from Radcliffe College,
and received an MA from Brandeis University. She
has published 12 volumes of poetry, most recently
Queen of a Rainy Country. Two of these books
have been finalists for the National Book Award.
Her new book, Traveling Light, is due from Norton
in January. Pastan's poems have appeared in
many journals, including The Atlantic Monthly, The
New Yorker, The Nation, The Georgia Review. She
has been Poet Laureate of Maryland, and in 2003
she won the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for lifetime
achievement. She lives with her husband in
Potomac Maryland. They have 3 children and 7

Workshop Information: Offering 6 continuing
education credits for social workers (Category I),
and members of allied helping professions,
including LPCs. Also open to community members
not pursuing continuing education credits.
COSTS: $60.00 for those registering for CEU
credits $10.00 for members of the community not
pursuing CEUs. No registration fee for employees
of agencies associated with the Bureau of Senior
Services.
LUNCH: An hour and 15 Minute lunch break is
scheduled to allow participants to have lunch in one
of the many fine restaurants in Shepherdstown.

PRESENTERS
PM1 Sherri Philpott, LICSW has worked with
trauma survivors, homeless families, chronically
mentally ill adults and the bereaved. She has a
small private practice in Charles Town, WV and is a
volunteer counselor at the Eastern Panhandle Free
Clinic. A journal keeper since age 12, Sherri
received certification as a Journal Facilitator
through the Center for Journal Therapy in Denver,
Colorado last summer. She is enthusiastic about
sharing therapeutic benefits of journal writing with
others.
PM2 Karen Stefano, Ed.M., M.A., L.P.C., is an
artist and practicing counselor. She has been
leading Collage Playshops around the world for
more than 20 years. Bringing together the
artistry of her creative work (she is a trained
sculptor and painter), psychotherapy, and the
quest for higher meaning, Karen's goal is to
establish unity between body, mind, and spirit.

PM3 Karen Green, MSSW, LCSW-C is an Assoc.
Prof. at Shepherd Univ. and has extensive
experience is working with group participants of all
ages. She is a recipient of a CSWE BEL grant
which aims to recruit students to gerontological
social work to ensure an adequate elder care
workforce. BSW students will assist in this
workshop.
PM4 Jennifer Soule, Ph.D., MFA, is former
Program Director and Professor Emerita of
Social Work at Shepherd University, a diplomate
in clinical social work and a published poet who
is interested in the transformational power of
words.
Geri Crawley-Woods, Ph.D. LICSW is a Prof. of
Social Work at Shepherd Univ. where she
directs the field education program. She and
Jennifer have collaborated in many community
and creative projects over the years.

PRESENTERS
AM1 Fanny Smith is a retired psychiatric social
worker who is a master gardener and an active
volunteer in the community. R. Grant Smith and
Renny Travers Smith are retired from the US
Department of State. Grant was a Political Officer
specializing in South and Central Asia and US
Ambassador to Tajikistan. Renny received an MSW
from Catholic University. They enjoy tending their
horses and garden in Bakerton.
AM 2 Betty Ellzey, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor
of English, Co-coordinator of Women’s Studies, and
Director of the Rude Mechanicals Medieval and
Renaissance Players at Shepherd University. She
earned her Ph.D. in Medieval Literature from
Catholic University. She started dancing in college,
over 40 years ago, and has continued taking ballet
and modern dance ever since.
AM 3 Peggy Osna Heller, PhD, LICSW, RPT, is a
diplomate in clinical social work, a clinical poetry
therapist, and a master mentor/supervisor and has
been active in the poetry therapy community since
1981 when she completed her poetry therapy
training at St. Elizabeths Hospital. She has held
poetry therapy positions at major Washington, D.C.
psychiatric hospitals and treatment centers and with
Kenneth Gorelick, M.D. co-directed the Wordsworth
Center for Growth and Healing. Peggy conducts a
private practice of psychotherapy and poetry
therapy in Potomac, Md.
AM 4 Glenda E. McNeill, ACSW LCSW-C is
former Program Director and Associate Professor
Emerita, Hood College, Frederick, Maryland.
Gretchen J. McKnew ACSW LCSW is an
experienced Clinician with established mental
health practice.
Donald H. McKnew, Jr. MD Psychiatrist: provider
of psychotherapy and psychopharmacology in
extensive private practice in addition to research
about childhood depression at NIMH
