Almost all the leaves have fallen from the trees and now the colder weather is with us. Many of you are thinking of Christmas with collections at the supermarkets and garden centres and out with Santa Claus and his sleigh, his helpers knocking on doors to collect pennies and sometimes notes to swell the funds to enable the clubs to help the people in need and in unfortunate circumstances at this time of year in our time honoured way of “We Serve” In October I attended my second Council of Governor’s meeting in Solihull. We discussed and debated many issues, including two very important issues – Governance of the MD and Future Redistricting. As soon as there are firm proposals I will be sending the information out to all the clubs and members. Most clubs would have received the initial consultation document from the Council Chairman. There will be a very important meeting at the end of November on which I will report back to you. The October Cabinet meeting saw a change in the way business was conducted – this made for a more interesting meeting with discussion items on the agenda. The Convention Chairman PDG Dave Atkins asked everyone to be on the lookout for other venues suitable for Convention, items brought forward from the Long Range Planning Committee were discussed and we are hoping to hold a Leo Convention next year for all our Leos to attend. I am visiting clubs along with Lions Fred and Ian throughout our District and learning all the different ways used to raise and collect money from the public. Why don’t you go visiting other clubs in your Zone to learn other ideas which have been tried and tested by others. Charter Anniversaries are now becoming numerous and I would like to thank all the clubs who have invited me to attend their event for the festivities, fellowship and fun. After many months I was able to finalise the Lions Clubs International Foundation grant which was received and match funded by the Cornwall Lions to provide a £22,000 mobile life saving Zoll Patient Monitor for one of the new Cornwall Air Ambulances. So Lions I ask that you continue to support the Foundation with funds otherwise we may be unable to apply for future grants. Peace Poster - I have selected SW’s winning entry to go forward to the Multiple District Final. I received 16 winning entries out of 700 entries from 12 clubs. The winning entry came from Minehead Lions and was Lilac Cottington. The two runners up were Raphael Maxwell (Glastonbury & Street Lions) and Maizie Mae Patrick (Exeter West Lions) I must congratulate all the contestants on the high standard of entry making it a challenge to select the best entry. Good luck to Lilac in the Multiple District Final. Young Ambassador – by the time you read this our SW final will have taken place at Okehampton so I will announce the winning finalist next month. This year we have 5 contestants, which is an improvement on past years, but I am sure with all the excellent young people in our communities we could have a much greater number entering in the future. I would like to wish all the Lions, Leos and their partners and families my Seasons Greetings for a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year Alone we can do so little – together we can do so much Lesley Clarke District Governor (the Page 3 Girl) task, with a current MOT certificate, valid insurance and a valid tax disc. The insurer of the towing vehicle should be advised that the vehicle will be used to tow a Santa Sleigh and that any drivers are covered by the required insurance. The Santa Sleigh (trailer) must be roadworthy with working lights and brakes where appropriate. Care must be taken to ensure the trailer is securely attached to the towing vehicle and that the breakaway chain is as short as reasonably practicable. Items such as sweets may be given out of the trailer, but not thrown while the vehicle is in motion. If you are to carry a passenger ( i.e. Santa) you will need to clear it with your local Police Authority that this is acceptable to them and their interpretation of the Road Traffic Act You must ensure there is sufficient safety Christmas is coming It’s time to dust off Santa’s sleigh and prepare everything for the festive season collections. Here are a few pointers to ensure you have a successful and safe time this Christmas. Santa’s may have to be CRB checked, this is a requirement by most stores and local authorities. Santa must have a chaperone with him while children are present. All persons taking part in collection should wear ID issued by the club. All persons taking part in collecting should be listed by the club, wear Hi – visibility jackets and carry a working torch where appropriate. The towing vehicle must be suitable for the consideration for the passenger - a seat or chair is securely fixed and some form safety belt or grab rail fitted. It may be prudent that on every occasion that a passenger is carried that the vehicle is not driven above walking pace. All monies collected at the end of the evening should be given to the Treasurer or deposited in a safe haven (overnight safe or bank safe) any person carrying substantial amounts of money should be accompanied to ensure safety of the money and the courier. Having seen the enjoyment and the therapeutic benefits that the disabled riders obtained from their riding sessions the then Lion President, Alan Benson, with the Club’s agreement, made the obtaining of a suitable pony one of the major projects for his year. A search began, with the RDA Group leading, and eventually finding an ideal candidate. INKY was found, she is an 11 year old sturdy 14.2 hands cob with a wonderful temperament and the purchase was arranged with Exeter West Lions Club’s assistance. The photograph shows Immediate Past Lion President, Alan Benson, presenting the Exeter West Lions Club’s cheque to Mrs Clare Rendle, Group Chairman, for the Acorn and Squirrels YEO VALLEY LIONS CLUB A SPECIAL BIKE FOR A SPECIAL BOY Y eo Valley Lions Club has recently helped to purchase a specially adapted tricycle which has then been donated to a local family living in Blagdon. This family has an 8 year old son Seth who was born with Down Syndrome and speech, hearing and vision impairment. Mum and Dad wanted to provide him with additional stimulation and enjoyment as well as being able to take part in outside activities with his friends. The adapted trike was made to order by a firm in Gloucester. The Lions Club provided transport for the family to travel to the factory so that Seth could be introduced to the trike. The necessary final adjustments were made with Seth in the saddle and Mum and Dad were given instruction on the use of the special controls. Seth’s obvious pleasure in riding his new trike was a joy to see and there is no doubt that he will get many hours of fun and exercise in the years to come. NEWQUAY LIONS SPONSORED OUTREACH PROJECT WITH MOMBASA PWANI LIONS A few years ago our Club Newquay Lions carried out a twinning with Mombasa Pwani Lions in Kenya who have their own Eye Hospital and several of their members are surgeons and doctors. One of their programs is to run Outreach Projects in poverty stricken areas to assist those who are unable to afford or have access to eye treatment. I n keeping with the ‘Sight First’ initiative our club decided to sponsor one of these Projects on an annual basis. Last years project was in a town called Malindi and this years in a rural area near Kalifi. Both areas around 2 hours north of Mombasa. were:- Wagg Food Ltd, Monument Vets (Redruth & Camborne), The Cornwall Kawasaki Centre Lanner, Gilbertson & Page Ltd & Crown Pet Foods Ltd Our President Peter Bragg often visits Kenya and so we time the Outreach Projects to coincide with when he is in Mombasa so as to visit on the day of screening and then meet the patients afterwards in the hospital back in Mombasa. Everything is free to those who attend screening, this includes surgery for cataract removal, aftercare and transport back to where they live. It is a very humbling experience to be able to assist these patients who are incredibly grateful for the ‘Gift of Sight’ that they receive. If any other clubs are interested in supporting such a project please contact president@newquaylions.co.uk O C amborne Redruth & District Lions Club presented their 36th Annual Companion Dog show at the Redruth Community Centre, Foundry Row Redruth TR15 1AN on Sunday 1st November.
