Grade 1/2 News! Grade 2 News! November 2014 October 2012 November News! What a great month October was! The students have been working so hard and have been showing a lot of excitement for all of the new learning. I have seen a lot of growth in the students these past two months and they are really starting to show their great personalities. I can’t wait to see what this month brings. Check out the newsletter to see what is happening in our classroom. As always if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to write a note in the agendas or call me at the school. Have a great month! Sincerely, Miss. Miller Language This month we will be learning how to infer as we read. We will be working on being good detectives and solve different mysteries given. Different types of mysteries that the students will be given are: infer how the person is feeling, infer what will happen next and infer the season of this story. Even though we have finished our retell unit, it is still important that students continue to practise retelling as they read independently and also out loud at home. We will also be learning how to write letters to other people. The grade 1/2s will also start adding more details into their writing to explain all of their ideas. Calendar Updates Reminders: After seeing the first snow on Saturday, I think it is safe to say our days are going to be getting colder. As many of you know our school yard can get very windy and cold. I recommend sending/leaving extra hats and mitts in backpacks for colder mornings/days. Morning recesses have been very chilly so extra warm items in backpacks would be great! Social Studies There will be a November calendar sent home tomorrow with upcoming school and classroom events. Until then here are a few important dates to keep in mind: The Grade Ones are continuing to learn about roles, responsibilities and relationships and how they can change. Remembrance Day Assembly: November 6th, 2014 Spelling Tests: Every Friday Library Day: Every Day 2 Parent-Teacher Interviews: November 13 th and 14th The Grade Twos are continuing to learn about how different traditions started and learn about different celebrations/holidays. Examples: Halloween, Remembrance Day and Hanukah Grade 1/2 News! November 2014 Reading Program and Raz Kids Way to go grade 1/2s and dedicated helpers at home. This has been such a successful month of reading. I am so pleased to announce that almost the whole class has reached our reading goal! As a result, we have earned our free activity time and will receive it at some point this week. I have seen such an excitement in the students with their nightly reading! They are so excited to show me all of the books they have read! We will continue on with our next monthly challenge. I will be discussing with the students this week what they want to set as their activity for the month of November. I encourage the students to try reading their nightly books on Raz-Kids. This program is amazing for all reading levels. It provides students with an endless list of books that are at their reading level to practise with. By reading books at their own reading levels, students can practise their reading fluency, accuracy and their comprehension/understanding of what they read. Grade One Math Grade Two Math We have just finished our patterning unit in Grade One. The students have learned how to make different repeating patterns by using one attribute (colour, size, shape etc). They have also learned how to find the missing pieces in a pattern, how to extend patterns and how to show patterns in different ways. We are currently finishing up our patterning unit. The students have learned how to make repeating patterns using two attributes (size, shape, colour etc), show repeating patterns in different ways, make and recognize growing and shrinking patterns and use all of this knowledge to problem solve. We are now moving into data management. We will be learning how to sort objects into categories, collect and organize data onto graphs, describe what we see on a graph and pose and answer questions about graphs we see or make. Ideas for at home practice: graph the different meals they eat in a month and see which one they eat most often or graph the daily weather or temperatures. We are now moving into data management. We will be making different types of graphs, analysing them and understanding the importance of the different features on a graph.
