Course Scope:
This one-year course in advanced photography techniques is designed for those students who may
be interested in pursuing photography as a career. Emphasis is placed on the advanced principles
of black and white and color photography, videography, and digital imaging. This course is
repeatable. This course will fulfill one of the elective credits
required for graduation.
Course Goals:
1. To acquire a vocabulary specific to advanced imaging.
2. To develop skills and knowledge of fine black and white printing techniques.
3. To develop skills and responsibilities in the care and safe use of color equipment
and materials.
4. To further develop the natural application of artistic composition.
5. To consistently apply evaluative criteria for teacher and student criticism.
6. To refine skills in black and white negative and print processing techniques.
7. To consistently apply the skills for negative quality.
8. To consistently apply the skills for print quality.
9. To experiment with creative darkroom techniques.
10. To experiment with studio lighting techniques.
11. To investigate a variety of photo finishing techniques.
12. To investigate trends in electronic imaging.
13. To investigate the art of videography/cinematography.
14. To prepare a portfolio for exhibition.
15. To investigate career and college opportunities in photography.
16. To become aware of the ethics and legal aspects of modern electronic imaging.

Textbooks
The following text(s) will be utilized in this course:
 Photography, Tenth Edition by London and Upton will be used as a supplement in
class only. Students will not be assigned a textbook; however books will be available
to check out if needed.
Student Supplies
Students are expected to have and maintain the following supplies all year:

Cameras:
1. Students are REQUIRED to provide their own digital camera. A digital SLR camera
(DSLR) is recommended, but most point and shoot digital cameras are acceptable for this
course. Here is what your camera must have:


Digital camera must have 5.0 megapixels or higher. Anything less will not work
for this course. Cameras within a cell phone or smart phone CANNOT be used
for this course.
If you do not have a digital camera you may rent and check out a school
camera. A $100 REFUNDABLE security deposit is required before checking out
cameras.
2. DSLR cameras will be provided for students to use during class time (on occasion), once a
release form has been signed by the student and parent/guardian (see last page). DSLR
cameras can be rented and checked out. If you have your own DSLR camera, you are
more than welcome to bring it to class.
 Lab Fee:
A $40.00 fee must be paid by Friday September 13, 2013. The fee covers the cost of
photographic chemicals, darkroom equipment, classroom, and computer supplies. A few
examples are: Photo Paper, Digital Prints, Mounting supplies for portfolios.
Notebook:
A spiral notebook designated for photography only will be collected every other week. The
notebook will contain notes, journal entries, quotes and in-class work. This notebook is
extremely important to your grade and should be taken seriously. You will need a notebook
with at least 100 pages.
Flash drive:
Students must provide their own flash drive (or external hard drive) for saving all digital files. A
flash drive of at least 4GB is recommended, and may be shared with other classes.
Tardy Policy
Tardiness is a serious disruption to the educational program. Every student is required to be
in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings. With that in mind, the Legacy High School Tardy
Policy will be strictly enforced. On the first tardy, the student will be warned; on the second
tardy, the parent will be contacted; on the third and all subsequent tardies, the student will
be sent to the deans’ office and placed on a Required Parent Conference. In addition to the
Legacy Tardy Policy, Legacy will utilize a Tardy Lockout System.

Rounding Policy: Letter grades will be rounded to the higher grade only if the highest percentage
plus a .5 or higher is earned. For example: if a student earns an “89.5” then the grade will be
rounded to an “A”.
Description of Grading Procedureso Point System: Projects, film assignments, quizzes and notebooks will all be graded on a
point system. Each will be assigned points based on the complexity and time frame of the
assignment. For example: photos will be worth more than notebooks because photos
take longer and are more complicated to create. Projects will be accepted late for a loss
of points per week.
o Notebooks: Students are required to keep an organized notebook with notes, current
events, and in class projects and assignments. Notebooks will be checked every other
Friday (depending on A/B schedule) and must be brought to class everyday. Notebooks
will not be accepted late unless student is absent on the day notebooks are collected. In
this case, notebooks are due on the day the student returns unless work needs to be
completed (see make-up work below).
o Homework: The digital assignments are typically the only homework given (50pts).
Students will be given 1 week to complete 24 images. All other work is done during class
time. However, if class time is wasted, class work may need to be taken home to complete
on time.
o Extra Credit: The teacher will offer extra credit to the entire class for prints and other
projects. Students may not ask for extra credit on an individual basis. Extra prints will
receive 0-5 points depending upon the quality of the work.


Standards of Preparation. Spelling, grammar and neatness will impact the written work
turned in, so be sure all work is correct.

Make-up Work, Late Work, and Attendance
 Make-up procedures• After an absence, students will be expected to check the make-up work area in
class. Make-up work will be located in a notebook next to the teacher’s desk.
•
This centralized location will hold the objectives, notes, journal/quote given each
day. Students must obtain make-up work within three days of an absence,
unless other arrangements with the teachers are made.
• Students are responsible for getting/requesting make-up work and scheduling after
school to make-up tests/quizzes or projects.
 Since most of the work is done during class time, absences will dramatically
impact your overall grade. In order to make up a project, students must schedule
a time to come in after school (not class time) if they want to use the darkroom,
computers or any classroom supplies. Class time is for current work not make-up.
 If an absence occurs on a day where a major project is due, the student must turn
in the project the day that he/she returns to school or it will be a zero. Ample time
will be given prior to the project’s due date therefore extra time will not be given.

Hours of Availability- I am available after school for student assistance. If you need
assistance or extra darkroom or computer time, you must set up a time with me at least ONE
day in advance. Advanced notice is required so assistance does not conflict with parent
conferences and Photography Club meetings.

Attendance
After the seventh unexcused absence, students will be denied credit and will receive an “F” for the
course.
Classroom Behavior Expectations

Classroom Behavioral Expectations
1. Classroom Behavior:
o 1. BE PUNCTUAL: be silently seated working on your bell work before the bell rings.
o 2. BE PREPARED: have all the required materials (notebook, photos, pencil, paper,
etc) with you before you enter the classroom.
o 3. BE FOCUSED: pay attention, follow instructions, ask questions and stay on task!
o 4. BE RESPECTFUL: of yourself, the teacher or substitute teacher, your peers,
classroom, darkroom, computers, materials, equipment and supplies! No food or drink
in the class or darkroom!
o 5. BE POSITIVE: Keep an open mind, don’t give up when you are frustrated,
persevere and help your peers!
2. Start and Finish Behavior:
 Upon entering the classroom students will sit in their assigned seat, complete current
event and wait for instructions. No students may work in the darkroom or on the
computers until permission is given.
 During the last 5-10 minutes of class students must thoroughly clean and organize
the classroom and darkroom and return to their assigned seats for dismissal. Before
anyone is dismissed the darkroom and classroom must pass inspection. If a student
refuses to contribute to the upkeep of the classroom or darkroom he/she will lose
these privileges.
 The teacher dismisses the students NOT THE BELL! Students are to be in their seats
until they are dismissed.
 NO FOOD OR DRINKS ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM, COMPUTER LABS OR
DARKROOM
3. Legacy Progressive Discipline Plan:
 1st infraction: Student Warning/Conference with student
 2nd infraction: Contact Parent/Guardian
 3rd infraction: Teacher’s Detention
 4th infraction: Counselor’s Referral
 5th infraction: Referral to Dean
Fighting, vandalism, overt defiance and stopping class from functioning will result in an immediate
Dean’s referral; the above consequences do not apply.
4. Restroom Passes:
TWO restroom passes will be given each quarter, only in an emergency. Students
MUST have their school agenda to leave the classroom.
5. Citizenship:
A mark of “O” (outstanding) will be earned by students with exceptional attendance,
motivation, punctuality, maturity, helpfulness, and willingness to work well with peers
and teacher.
A mark of “S” (Satisfactory) will be earned by students with satisfactory attendance,
motivation, punctuality, maturity, helpfulness, and willingness to work well with peers
and teacher.

A mark of “U” (Unsatisfactory) or “N” will be earned by students with unsatisfactory
attendance, motivation, punctuality, maturity, helpfulness, and willingness to work well
with peers and teacher.
6. Other Items:
A. Art Contests and Exhibits:
Throughout the year there will be art/photo contests either through the district or
nationwide. Students are expected to participate in these events.
At the end of the school year, the Visual Arts Department will have a student art
exhibit. Each student is required to submit artwork for the exhibit and to attend the
event. This event is tentatively scheduled for May 15th, 2014. Please plan ahead.
B. Care of Equipment and Supplies:
If any student misuses, steals or wastes any of the materials in the darkroom or
classroom the student may lose all darkroom privileges, be fined for the material/
equipment and be referred to the dean for further disciplinary action.

CAMERA USE AGREEMENT:
Students will use the school’s DSLR cameras on occasion, or have the option to use film
SLR cameras. Cameras will be used during class time and students are expected to do the
following:
● Students will share cameras with classmates during class, and must remain with
camera partners while using the school camera.
● Students will follow all school rules or will be punished accordingly.
● If any damage occurs while in the possession of the student, student is
responsible for the cost of damage, up to $800.00.
