Excel Exercise 3
Name_______________________________________________ Section ______________
You work for Overstock Monitors – an online company who sells computer monitors of all brands,
sizes, and displays. You have been asked to use Microsoft Excel to keep track of sales, determine costs,
identify discounts, determine the status of warranties, and to provide some summary statistics by
brand.
Download OverstockMonitors.xlsx from the course website (http://business.uni.edu/iss/mgmt2080/).
1. Build the Worksheet.
a. Replace Student Name with your name in A2.
b. Merge and Center the Title in A1 over columns A-L. Increase the font to 16 point.
c. Merge and Center the text in A2 over columns A-L.
d. The headings in row 4 need to be centered and bolded. Also, wrap the text (Home tab,
Alignment Grouping, Wrap Text) and adjust the column widths and row height so the headings
look like this:
e. In cell G5, enter a formula to determine the tax applied for the monitor using the tax rate in cell
P1. Copy the formula down the column. Format the values in this column with two decimal
places.
f. The shipping cost of the monitor is determined by its size. Using the lookup table in columns O
and P, use a function to determine the shipping cost. Copy the function down the column.
Format the values in this column with two decimal places.
g. If the monitor is LCD, there is a $15.00 discount otherwise there is no discount. In cell I5 use a
function to show this discount for those that are LCD. Copy the function down the column.
Format the values in this column with two decimal places.
h. In cell J5, enter a formula to calculate the total cost as price plus tax plus shipping cost less
discount. Copy the formula down the column. Format the values in this column as currency
with two decimal places.
i.
In cell J16, use a function to sum the total cost for all monitors sold. Format this as currency
with two decimal places. Bold this value and add a double bottom border.

j.
Overstock Monitors offers a warranty on its monitors. The length of the warranty varies as you
can see in column K. You need to enter a function in L5 to determine the status of the
warranty. If the difference between the date stored in cell P2 and the Order Date is greater
than the length of the warranty, then show EXPIRED, otherwise, show Under Warranty.
k. Cells A18-C22 summarize the data above by monitors sold. In cell B 19, enter a function to
count the number of monitors that are of the brand Acer. Make sure to use the proper cell
referencing so you can copy this function down for the other brands.
l.
In cell C19, enter a function to sum the total cost of the monitors if the brand is Acer. Again,
make sure to use the proper cell referencing so you can copy this function down for the other
brands. Format the values in this column as currency with two decimal places.
2. Create a Chart.
a. Create a pie chart that displays total cost of monitor sold by brand. Title the chart “Monitors
Sold By Brand”. Add a subtitle that says, “Prepared by: Your Name”. Remove the legend.
Display the brand name and percentage of the cost of the monitors sold adjacent to the correct
pie segment. Position the chart so that the upper left corner is placed in cell A25, and bottom
right corner in G40.
3. Calculate Monthly Payment.
a. The monitors purchased in June were all purchased by one of Overstock Monitors’ best
customers. Because of this, the customer is billed at the end of the month, and has the option
to pay off the amount due in monthly payments over a 6 month time period, with an interest
rate of 11%.
b. In cell H18, use a function to determine the total cost of monitors purchased in June, which is
the amount to be financed. (Assume that the order records will always be listed in the order
date sequence.) Enter the interest rate in cell H19 and the number of payments in H20.
c. Use the PMT function on cell H21 to determine the monthly payment for this customer.
4. Saving, Printing, and Submitting.
a. Save your workbook as OverstockMonitors.xlsx.
b. To print the worksheet, select cells A1-L40. Select this as your print range (Page Layout
tab, Print Area button, Set Print Area). Change it to Landscape orientation, and it should
fit on one page.
c. Upload your completed file to your shared folder in Google Drive.
