In this half day training participants will learn practical and strategic techniques for managing children’s behavior and minimizing difficult behavior. At the conclusion of this workshop, attendants will be able to understand and demonstrate the essential skills for: leading positively, building healthy relationships with youth, structuring difficult situations, coaching social skills acquisition and Intervening actively and assertively when necessary.

October 7, 2013 Homework Help that HELPS!

Research suggests that when students have the homework support they need, they are more likely to succeed in school. This half day workshop will focus on strategies needed to implement a quality homework help program component. Participants will learn effective ways to assist children and youth with their homework. Tools for effective homework help supervision, ideas for systems and structures to design and execute homework help, resources and strategies for collaborating and supporting day school will also be provided.

October 8, 2013 SEL Basics

The best learning occurs in the context of supportive relationships in

which our job as educators is to develop. In this half day training participants will learn about the theory and practice of integrating social and emotional learning into the core of the classroom and school. We will explore classroom tools, as well as explore the culture and climate that support pedagogical practices. We will also discuss the role that adults play, as models of these efforts.

Techbridge offers projects and activities that foster teamwork as they build confidence and skills in engineering and technology. Each unit comprises lesson plans, ice-breakers, and career connections for five or six 90 minute sessions. Units planned for this year are: Food Science,

Design Challenges, and CSI. One unit will be covered at each of three,

October 21, 2013 STEM 101

In this half day training participants will learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) and how to integrate it into an afterschool program. Participants will engage in activities and discussion that will help them understand the STEM practices, experience handson activities that after-school staff can successfully facilitate using coinquiry, inform them about curricula, partners and other STEMrelated opportunities available in New York City and enable them to reflect on their program and determine what types of STEM activities they should introduce into their schedules so they can create a STEM action plan.

The fall means the first day of school, start of program and day 1 of your advocacy planning! In this half day session participants will begin thinking about the advocacy actions your program can take that will have the most impact on city and state elected officials.

Participants will leave with a calendar filled with a year’s worth of advocacy activities.

Youth Experiences in Science (YES) (Grades K-2)

Produced by California 4-H, this informal science program is

adaptable and fun. The curriculum includes seven science education units. Each unit includes the time required, suggested grouping, materials needed, preparation information, activity and discussion directions, plus a family activity booklet. This year TASC will use the following units in training: CLUE, Wee-Cyclo-Saurus, and Wonderful

Worms. Curriculum cost: approximately $85.

4H WonderWise (Grades 3-5)

Based on national science education standards, Wonderwise combines the investigations and personal insights of a variety of scientists. The lessons promote hands-on inquiry, diversity and collaboration, encourage development of science skills, and provide role models in the field of science. Each theme introduces a scientist through a video

(DVD), an activity CD-ROM and a series of activities. This twelve-hour training takes place over three sessions spaced throughout the year.

This year’s themes are: Rainforest Ecologist, African Plant Explorer, and Pollen Detective. Curriculum cost: approximately $90 http://wonderwise.unl.edu/

4H WonderWise

CryptoClub (Grades 6-8)

Cryptography, the science of secret messages, is an intriguing STEM topic and an important application of mathematics that teaches decimals, percents, pattern recognition and problem solving. In these sessions students are introduced to a cipher (method of encrypting), and then practice it through games and activities that involve sending and receiving secret messages. This sixteen-hour training takes place over four sessions spaced throughout the year.

December 2, 2013 FoodFight Educator Wellness Program: Nutrition Education and Wellness Strategies for Schools and Communities

In this half day training participants will be provided with an overview of the social, political and economic forces that shape what we eat; learn about strategies for improving personal health and the health of students and their communities; participate in an interactive workshop with a Whole Foods chef; leave with resources and tools for healthy eating as well as the updated FoodFight curriculum to integrate into your school’s program.

This training is part one of a two-part institute that will introduce all levels of program staff to the elements of a quality lesson plan.

Attendees will learn the different lesson plan parts and explore how each part works in harmony to support the others. The workshop will also include opportunities to write your own lesson plans as well as to explore project-based planning materials for more long term, engaging youth development experiences. Program directors and supervisors will receive tips and resources to support their staff members with the lesson and unit planning process including observation and coaching.

November 20, 2013 Lesson Planning: The Key to Quality Programming

(Session III)

This is the final day of a two part Lesson Planning Institute. Program supervisors and direct line staff will have the opportunity to come together to reflect on their experiences with lesson planning and/or project-based planning. Professional discussions and feedback will provide participants with opportunities to learn best practices related to all aspects of the lesson planning and facilitation process. This session will allow for further exploration of The Lesson Plan by critiquing and revising a plan and working in groups to create exemplar Youth Development activity experiences for our children!
