Contract Activity Description:

The Fontana Library System will partner with at least
25 childcare facilities in Jackson, Macon, and Swain
Counties and the Cherokee Indian Reservation to augment early literacy programming in classrooms for toddler through pre-school age children by providing coaching with classroom staff and early literacy materials to enrich the classroom environments.
The Fontana Library Early Literacy Specialist will visit the participating childcare facilities for each of ten months and co-present planned thematic story programs along with classroom teachers, while coaching them about strategies to develop early literacy skills.
The program will incorporate research principles of the Every Child Ready to Read model.
The Specialist will assist teachers in evaluating progress in skill development related to promoting early literacy skills in the classroom.
The Specialist will follow up with the teachers each month to assess their use of early literacy strategies and assist in improving classroom performance.
The Specialist will utilize the Reading Rover
Bookmobile to assist the classroom staff in enhancing their literacy rich environments by providing access to quality multi-cultural children’s literature that may

Activity: Reading Rover be borrowed from the Bookmobile during the monthly visits.
Through the lending program, childcare staff and children will have increased access to story telling kits, books, puppets, puzzles and educational games that can be chosen according to the interests and developmental needs of the children in their classrooms.
Staff will offer on-line and distance learning training and workshops for caregivers focusing on strengthening children’s pre-literacy skills as well as promoting the use of library materials.
