SENIOR LECTURER: NEUROPHYSIOLOGY
DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN BIOLOGY
FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES
The Department of Human Biology, which is a vibrant multidisciplinary department in the Faculty of Health, is seeking to appoint an
established researcher and lecturer in Neurophysiology.
The Neurosciences in the Department of Human Biology is a dynamic and diverse discipline. There is a strong tradition in basic
research on aspects of development and repair of the nervous system, model systems of neurodegenerative as well as behavioural
disorders and the influence of stress, the effects of exercise on neuroprotection, the role of the central nervous system in controlling
fatigue, affective neuroscience, and the cellular organization of signal processing in the central nervous system. The diversity of
Neuroscience research represented in the department is reflected by expertise in methods comprising cell culture, light and
electron microscopy, biomedical imaging, electrophysiology, behavioural testing and neuroanatomy. Numerous collaborations are
established at the local and international level and include strong links to clinical disciplines like Neurology and Psychiatry.
Academics in the department also make a major contribution to Neuroscience teaching at under- and postgraduate level.
Requirements:
 A minimum academic qualification of a PhD in Physiology or related field
 A minimum of three years post-PhD research experience in neuroscience
 A proven track record in research publications
 Experience in teaching neurophysiology
 Experience in supervising or co-supervising post-graduate students
 Experience in management (of staff and/or research projects)
Advantages:

 Recognition of standing in the neuroscience community e.g. office bearer in national and/or international neuroscience
societies, invited speaker/instructor at international neuroscience meetings
Responsibilities:
 Research
o Conceptualise, lead and execute research projects related to neuroscience (protocol development, data collection and
analysis, publication of results, translation of findings)
o Design and optimise research techniques currently used in the field of neuroscience
o Train students and other staff members to utilise these techniques in relevant research projects
o Develop/expand research collaborations both nationally and internationally
o Raise research funding, apply for grants from appropriate national and international funding bodies
 Teaching
o Prepare and deliver neurophysiology-related and more general physiology-related lectures, practical experiments and
tutorials for under-graduate and post-graduate students
o Develop teaching materials
o Supervise/co-supervise post-graduate students (BSc Med Hon, MSc and PhD)
 Leadership, management and administration
o Perform administrative functions at Departmental, Faculty and University level, if needed
o Perform administrative functions related to teaching and research projects (i.e. convene courses, manage research
teams, manage funding for research, monitor operational expenses, write progress reports, etc)
o Organise and facilitate meetings and workshops in neuroscience.
o Develop partnerships and networks in your specific field of neuroscience research.
 Social responsiveness
o Translate research findings into the community, for the benefit of the public, where relevant.
The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is R595 903.
