There were some other practical activities which students took part in such as African drumming to help demonstrate the impact culture has on music, bangle decorating, Adrinka body tattooing, steel pan drumming November Personal safety and Anti- bullying December Drug and alcohol January Cultures and Faiths awareness Religious calendars are on display on college sites to raise awareness and celebrate diversity A wide range of activities that help raise awareness To raise awareness of the potential impact of bullying, to raise awareness of Joint Enterprise law and address issues surrounding knife crime, to look at ways of keeping safe both on the streets and when using social network websites. Emphasise zero tolerance and possible consequences of bullying within the College and familiarise students with local Safer Neighbourhood and Safer Transport Teams and College Security staff as well as inform students of support available within the College. Activities were carried out in all sites to raise awareness of potential consequences of substance misuse. The college included other agencies/ groups/ experts to gain views and knowledge on the topic Students participated in a spiritual journey map, dressed up in some traditional outfits create faith beads as well as explore their meaning and importance, learn about the influences of Bollywood, listen to a visual session on Saree draping and some dance routines February LGBT Month LGBT history timeline, temporary tattoos, badge making using Stonewall’s slogan ‘some people are gay get over it’ as well as the rainbow symbol. LGBT social group has been running 2 main activities titled ‘where do I stand’ and ‘lets rephrase that’ since October 2011 March Foundation Skills Foundation skills students and over 500 students have participated in a wide range of sporting activities. There was Document1 6 Havering College of Further and Higher Education __________________________________________________ Sports a sports day at the end of the year A wide range of activities including jigsaw of mental health, paper fortune teller, facts and figures, helped raise awareness, challenge discrimination and encourage students to explore their own thoughts and feelings Mental Health and Well-being May Deaf Awareness Wide range of information was displayed across all three sites; students were given the opportunity to learn finger spelling International day against homophobia Information display and wearing of orange ribbon Displays, leaflets and activities to raise awareness, highlight atrocities and the fact that it is about everyone Human Rights awareness 2.11 The Equality and Diversity Management Committee and Working Group considered the following agenda items: Document1 LGB&T – staff group has now been established Equality & Diversity Champion - The College’s Equality Champion provides equality training to new staff at the College’s Generic Induction events Supporting Ethnic Minority Students – Equality and Diversity Action Plan – action plan has been updated Analysis of Student Survey EDIMs – refer to 1.1 above Stonewall- college has submitted documentation for consideration in the Stonewall Workplace equality Index 2013 Including Equality and Diversity in lesson observations – Quality team to work in conjunction with E&D champion Destinations analysis by Equality and Diversity groupings - UCAS applications 338 applicants compared to 401 last year and 458 in 2011, with a 84% placement rate, compared to 71% last year and 69% in 2011. HE students at Havering College have risen from 27 to 42, compared to 40 and 31 in the previous 2 years. Staff Development – E&D champion to deliver ‘Dignity At Work’ training to all staff Prayer Rooms - Good representation of staff in new multi-faith group faith room is now available however students need to be informed and their opinion sought regarding suitability regarding the screen issue. Usage needs monitoring. Membership of the Management committee reviewed – should now include representative from : Estates, ILT, student member 7 Havering College of Further and Higher Education __________________________________________________ 2.12 Disability resources – new accessible toilets and bungalow in Quarles, funding for disabilities in sports, Estates have provided adjustable tables and chairs for learners with specific needs, science labs and some classrooms have adjustable furniture. E&D statements to employers has been updated Language Translators – register containing bi and multilingual staff is now available and accessible Specific Actions in the Single Equality Scheme The draft action plan for 2013/14 is attached at Appendix 1. This will be taken to CMT and TLS and will be implemented and monitored by the E&D Management Committee. 2.13 New Projects for Academic Year 2013/14 A successful bid was made for funding to deliver a project based on the findings of research carried out by the skills funding agency into sexual orientation and gender identity. The student LGB&T group are working with Student Services and the community group PARIS. The project will advance equality, diversity and inclusion of LGB&T students by delivering on recommendations made by the Skills Funding Agency both curricula and teaching will be inspected for content that assumes the norm is heterosexuality. Anti homophobic training will be compulsory for all observers and the Quality Team. Students will be involved in presenting rules, policies and consequences in a style and manner which is student friendly and is disseminated in the most effective way. Work with external partners with extensive experience in working with the LGBT community will be extended allowing for new and innovative responses to support students both externally and internally.
