Legend Title: Ant Hill Key Points: Category Heads up Feet moving Games Stickhandling Description Divide the players into four equal teams. All the food (pucks, cones, balls, etc…) will be placed in the center circle. Players will try to bring as much food back to their base as they can. Food is safe only within their own base. After the coach starts the game, all players may leave their zone. Players may only carry one piece of food with them at a time. Players try to bring their food back into their own base. Players from other teams may steal the food from another player on the way back to their own base. Notes: Add more bases if there are a lot of participants. Remove teams 8only use one base) and use 1/3 of the ice if there are fewer participants. Adjust the game based on needs. Title: Asteroids Key Points: Category Skating Balance Games Agility Description Divide the group into two equal sized groups, one skater group and one attacker group. Create a skating lane for the players. Set up “launch pads” with foam pucks, tennis balls, or other soft objects. Attackers are manning the launch pads. Allow the players to skate through the “attack” zone. The attackers are now throwing the soft objects against the skates of the skaters. Each player must avoid the objects and cross the zone untouched. If they are hit on the skate, they will be considered out. Allow enough space on the ice for players to stop without sliding. Notes: If there are not as many participants, use only 1/3 of the ice. The “launch pads” would be set up on the blueline, shooting towards the end boards. The skaters would try to cross in between the face-off circles, from one face-off dot to the other. Title: British Bulldog Key Points: Skating Category Head up Games Agility Description Select two or more Bulldogs to start off the game as the designated taggers. They are to stay within the area between the bluelines The remaining players lineup at the goal line and must cross through the “junkyard” (are between the bluelines) untouched. If a Bulldog tags a player in the junkyard, the newly tagged player joins the Bulldogs. Continue until all players have been tagged. Bulldogs have to stay within the junkyard. Notes: If there are fewer players, play in 1/3 of the ice. The junkyard would then become the zone between the two face-off dots. Title: Chaos Stickhandling Key Points: Stickhandling Category Stickhandling Head up Feet moving Description Part 1 Divide players into smaller groups, using each circle as a zone. Each player has a puck and stickhandles within their designated circle, trying to avoid making contact with the others. Part 2 Designate one player to try to remove the other players’ pucks. Once each player has lost their puck, a new game starts. Title: Chariot Races Key Points: Category Skating technique Head up Game Fun competition Description Players pair up in groups of two. The player in front will grab onto both sticks, pulling the player behind them, starting from the goal line. The players will take turns after the first player has crossed over the other goal line. Examples of what the back player can do: 1. 2. 3. 4. Standing Standing with blades turned in to provide resistance On both knees Lay on stomach Notes: Adjust the length that the players skate based on the skill of the group. Title: Freeze Tag Key Points: Category Agility Head up Game Fun competition Description Designate a few players to be the taggers. The other players will try to skate away from the taggers. Once a player has been tagged, they will remain still. The game ends when all players have been frozen. Notes: Adjust the playing area based on the skill level and number of participants. Create multiple games to reduce the area players have to skate. Add in different rules for a player to be unfrozen: 1. A player can be freed if another player slides in between their legs 2. A player can be freed if another player skates around them once. 3. A player can be freed if another player tags them with two hands. Title: Mr. Wolf Key Points: Category Skating technique Game Fun competition Description One person is designated to be the wolf, the other skaters line up along the goal line. The wolf will have their back turned to the skaters. The skaters will ask, “What time is it Mr. Wolf” and the wolf will answer with “it’s _______ o’clock.” The skaters will have to take as many steps as the time is. If the wolf answers, “It’s lunch time!”, the wolf turns around and skates to the players to try and tag them. The skaters will retreat back to the goal line as fast as possible and try to avoid being tagged by the wolf. They are safe once they have reached the goal line. If a player gets tagged by the wolf he/she has to stop on the spot and wait until the wolf has tagged the players who have not made it behind the goal line. A new wolf can be selected every few rounds. Notes: Adjust the length that the players skate based on the skill of the group. Title: Relay Races Key Points: Category Skating technique Game Fun competition Description Divide the skaters into equally sized groups. Each round, the skaters will have a different skating technique to complete. The skaters line up behind each other at the goal line. Each skater performs the same skating technique and starts one the skater in front of her/him has returned back to the line. The team that finishes first wins this skating technique round. Examples of what the skaters can do: 1. Half turns 2. 360 degree turns 3. Stops Notes: Adjust the length that the skaters skate based on the skill of the group. Adjust the number of groups based on the number of skaters. For added difficulty, the skaters must complete their leg of the course while holding a tennis ball and must pass it to the next skater before they can start their turn. Title: Simon Says Key Points: Category Skating technique Listening skills Game Fun competition Description One person is designated to be Simon, the other skaters line up along the goal line. Each round, Simon says “Simon Says _________”, the skaters have to complete whatever it is that they are told to do. If Simon says a command but does not say “Simon Says”, the players are expected to do nothing. Examples of what the players can do: 1. Touch their toes 2. Hop on the ice 3. Shake their arms Notes: Alternate “Simon” every few rounds. Title: Treasure Hunter Key Points: Skating technique Category Head up Game Fun competition Description Divide the skaters equally into teams and line them up in parallel lines next to each other. The first skater from each line will skate to where the obstacles are, pick one up, and return to their line. The next skater in line will do the same, after the previous skater has returned to the line. Repeat until all the treasure has been picked up. Notes: The treasure can be anything that can easily be picked up. I.e. Cones, pucks, balls, sticks, etc… Adjust the length that the players skate based on the skill of the group. Smaller distances is ideal for younger or novice skaters. Title: Musical pucks Key Points: Skating Category Reaction Games Crossovers Description Using one or two circles (depending on the number of skaters) the skaters line up around the circle without sticks. Skaters skate clockwise around the circle staying on the line as they crossover. If there are five players put four pucks in the middle. On the coach’s signal, players dive in the middle to get a puck. If they don’t get one they are eliminated. Reduce the number of the pucks each round. The game is over when one skater is left. Change the skating direction in regular intervals to avoid the skaters getting dizzy. Title: Sharks and Minnows Key Points: Skating Category Reaction Games Crossovers Description The Minnows line up along the goal line and will attempt to skate across the ice to the other goal line with the pucks. The sharks (2 skaters at the beginning) begin in the middle between the blue lines. If the shark takes or knocks the puck from the stick of a minnow, the minnow becomes a shark and helps catch the remaining minnows. The game continues until only one minnow is left to skate from goal line to goal line. The game is over when every player has their puck knocked off of their sticks. Then you can start all over. Title: Obstacle Course Key Points: Skating Category Body Control Games Agility Description Create an obstacle course with any objects you can find. Sticks to jump over, cones with a stick on top to go under, cones to maneuver around, tires to go through, nets to go around. Instruct skaters to follow the course you have created one at a time for as many rounds as you like. Variety: Set up two identical courses and split the group in two parts. Let both groups compete each other to see which group is able to complete the course first. Title: Passing in a Circle Key Points: Passing Category Following Passes Games Head Up Description Players stand on the circle with their sticks and one puck. They pass the puck to each other, keeping the puck moving at all times. Variation: The player follows their pass towards the player they have passed it to. Or one player is in the middle and tries to intercept the passes. If she/he succeeds she/he gets to join the circle and the player who just passed has to go in the middle. Title: Cops and Robbers Key Points: Skating Category Fun Activity Games Agility Description Select two cops, the cops situate themselves between the hash-marks. The rest of the players are robbers who try to get from one face-off circle to the next without getting tagged by the cops. If a robber gets tagged by a cop that robber turns into a cop and the cop turns into a robber. When all robbers have reached the face-off circle they get ready to try to get back to the first face-off circle. This game continues without stopping for several minutes because the cops and robbers are changing places on the fly. Adjust the skating area depending on the size of the group and the skill level of the skaters. Title: Red Light, Green Light Key Points: Skating forward Category Stopping Games Listening to commands Description All player’s start against the boards. The coach starts out between the face-off circles. The coach commands are: Green Light-skate forward Red Light-stop Yellow light-lie down on their stomachs and get up quickly A new game begins when all players have made it to the other side. Adjust the length of the skating area depending on the skill level of the skaters. Legend ©, Coach, taggers X Player O Player Puck Δ Cone Forwards Skating Skating with puck Pass Shot Stick
