Tom was one of eleven children born to James Kinglsey Falkiner & Margaret Wedge Falkiner
in Galt, Ontario (now part of Cambridge).
Tom moved west from Galt in 1905 on the CPR in Winnipeg Manitoba. After working for the
CPR in Winnipeg as a switchman, he came to Kamsack in 1907, where he took up a
homestead one mile west of town. [He had two brothers, Bob and Charlie who also took up
homesteads in the area although both eventually returned to Ontario.] Tom started with the
CNR in 1918/19 during WWI as a trainman, and continued in that position until his
retirement in 1939 at age 65 years, without a CNR pension. He was also engaged in the
draying business.
Tom married Charlotte Miller on 26 July 1911 in the hamlet of Drumbo Ontario. Her brother
Ephraim and his Laura Edwards were the witnesses. She was born 2 Jan 1882 to Sarah Ann
Kalbfleisch and Emanuel "Menno" Miller and raised in Bright Ontario.
Charlotte and Tom had eight children in Kamsack, the eldest being two girls and the
remainder boys. One son died in infancy. The remaining grew to adulthood, married and
had families. Three sons remained in Kamsack area and worked for the CNR, while the
others raised their families in the Fort Erie area of Ontario. Every few years during their
retirement years, Charlotte and Tom would return to Ontario by train in the summer months
to visit with their families.
Tom was a member of the Kamsack fire brigade for many years, and was honored by a gold
watch by the fire department for his services. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of
Railway Trainmen.
Tom passed away in the Kamsack Nursing home at the age of 96 on 22 Aug 1970. His
widow Charlotte lived on her own in a small apartment in Kamsack right up until her death
on 18 Feb 1973 at the age of 91. They are buried together in Kamsack, with their infant son
Gordon and Tom's sister Fanny Falkiner Wonnell. Their sons, Jim, Roy and George are also
buried in Kamsack.

Charlotte was born 02 Jan 1882, the eldest daughter of Sarah Ann Kalbfleisch and Emanuel
"Menno" Miller, married 02 Jan 1879 in Blenheim Twp, Oxford Co, Ontario. She was raised
in the small community of Bright Ontario with her sister Amelia "Millie" (born 29 Aug 1883)
and brother Ephraim (born 05 Jun 1886). An elder infant brother Israel died on 20 Jul 1880.
She was raised among many cousins, aunts and uncles.
Between graduation from school and her marriage Charlotte and her cousin Jennie Miller
worked as cooks in a saw mill in Parry Sound Ontario, before moving into jobs in the textile
mills. Their fathers, Menno and Jake were partners in the mill. An entry in her autograph
book by a Jean Parton places her in Parry Sound on 8 Sep 1906. Charlotte worked in textile
mills in Berlin (now Kitchener) and in Detroit Michigan. She also was a nanny to a Cappy
Butterick, the daughter of a dentist in Detroit, of whom I have a photo. We have several
photographs of Charlotte taken while in Detroit. A postcard addressed to her from cousins,
Ercel and Clarence Inwood in Richwood Ont, places Charlotte in Bright Ontario in Feb 1909.
Charlotte was 29 years of age when she married Thomas "Tom" Falkiner on 26 July 1911 in
the hamlet of Drumbo Ontario. Her brother Ephraim and Laura Edwards were the witnesses.
Ephraim and Laura married on 15 Nov 1911. Her sister Amelia married Frank Shelby on 01
Jan 1908. Both siblings raised their families in the local area, although Frank and Amelia did
come west for a brief period of time.

Kamsack in 1907, where he took up a homestead one mile west of town.
A postcard written to her Mother dated August 1911 describes arriving at Kamsack, Sask for
the first time and being picked up at the train by Tom's brother Robert "Bob" in his cart and
oxen. Tom had two brothers, Bob and Charles, who also took up homesteads in the area,
though both eventually returned to Ontario.
Charlotte and Tom had eight children, the eldest being two girls and the remainder boys.
One son, Gordon, died in infancy. The remaining grew to adulthood, married and had

raised their families in the Fort Erie area of Ontario. Every few years during their retirement
years, Charlotte and Tom would return to Ontario by train in the summer months to visit
with their families, with whom Charlotte remained close until death.
Charlotte kept an autograph book which remains in the family. There are many entries from
friends and relatives over a span of more than a dozen years. Among her memorbilia are
newspaper clippings, funeral cards, obituaries, postcards, and photos, many of which are
identified in her hand writing. What is truly remarkable is how well preserved these articles
are, especially given the hardships of pioneer life in the Canadian prairies.
Charlotte lost the sight in one eye from an accident while living in Kamsack. Apart from that
she remained remarkabley healthy. She lived on her own in a small apartment in Kamsack
right up until her death on 18 Feb 1973 at the age of 91. Tom passed away in the Kamsack
Nursing home at the age of 96 on 22 Aug 1970. They are buried together in Kamsack, with
their infant son Gordon and Tom's sister Fanny Falkiner Wonnell. Their sons, Jim, Roy and
George are also buried at Kamsack.
