Public consultation
In 2008 Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) embarked on a £1.5 billion
expansion and enhancement programme which has seen the network almost
triple in size. This programme has already seen Metrolink extend to Oldham
and Rochdale, Ashton-under-Lyne and East Didsbury. An extension to
Manchester Airport and a second tramway across the city are being
constructed.
TfGM is now proposing a Metrolink extension through Trafford Park.
The proposed Metrolink Trafford Park Line will provide improved public
transport and access to employment, business, leisure and retail opportunities
in the area, as well as connections to the wider, expanded Metrolink network.
Trafford Park has more than 1,300 businesses, employing over 33,000 people,
many of whom travel to work by car. Popular retail and leisure destinations I
the area include the intu Trafford Centre, which attracts over 30 million people
a year, EventCity, the Imperial War Museum North, Salford Quays and Old
Trafford.
The proposed Trafford Park Line will offer a genuine alternative to car travel
for businesses, employees and visitors as well as supporting regeneration and
economic growth.
Connecting Trafford Park to the Metrolink network
Trafford Park Line
The proposed new line is approximately 5.5km long and will include six new
stops to serve businesses, retail and amenities along the route. It will leave the
existing Metrolink network at Pomona, pass under the Trafford Road Bridge
and follow Trafford Wharf Road, Warren Bruce Road, Village Way, Park Way
and Barton Dock Road, terminating outside the intu Trafford Centre.
The alignment of the route is subject to further design development as the
scheme progresses.
The previously approved route has been amended to accommodate changes
which have occurred in the area over the last 20 years, including the
developments at Salford Quays. The proposed route takes a central course
through Trafford Park, which is convenient to those wishing to access northern
and southern parts of the Park. This also means faster journey times between
the proposed Trafford Centre stop and Manchester city centre, and the wider
Metrolink network.
Wharfside
The Wharfside area will be served by two stops:
 Wharfside
 Imperial War Museum
The proposed Wharfside stop will be located at the edge of Trafford Park on
the bank of the Manchester Ship Canal. The proposed stop will be a short walk
from Old Trafford, Manchester United’s football ground, providing additional
public transport on match days and when other major events take place at the
stadium. The stop will provide excellent access to popular local walking routes,
to Salford Quays and to the Irwell River Park.
The proposed Imperial War Museum stop will provide excellent access to the
world-renowned, award-winning museum housed in the iconic building
designed by Daniel Libeskind, and to the newly developed ITV studios, home to
the new Coronation Street set. The proposed stop will provide access to
existing footbridges, across the Manchester Ship Canal, which link Salford
Quays, the Lowry Outlet Mall, The Lowry, the BBC and MediaCityUK.
Trafford Park central area
The Trafford Park central area will be served by two stops:
 Village
 Parkway
These stops will provide access to the many businesses located within the Park.
The proposed Village stop is located near Village Circle and Third Avenue for
access to businesses in the Village area.
As part of the proposal, a Park and Ride site will be situated near to the
Parkway stop, adjacent to the existing Parkway Circle, which will be
remodelled to accommodate the tram. The Park and Ride will include blue
badge bays.
EventCity / Trafford Centre
The area will be served by two stops:
 EventCity
 Trafford Centre
The proposed EventCity stop will provide access to Barton Square retail and
leisure attractions and to the wide range of local, regional and national events
hosted at EventCity, including public and trade exhibitions and conferences.
The proposed Trafford Centre stop will provide superb access to the shopping
and leisure opportunities available at the complex. The stop will provide a link
between the intu Trafford Centre, Trafford Park and the wider Metrolink
network.
Design, access and construction
A key consideration in the delivery of the Trafford Park Line is the need to
effectively manage construction and minimise disruption to businesses. This
will be managed by working closely with Trafford Council and other
stakeholders to plan an appropriate construction programme.
Businesses based throughout the Park require continued access to and from
their premises for deliveries and services. We are working closely with
businesses along the route to develop our proposals in a sensitive manner and
ensure design detail is consistent with the urban environment. All stops will be
accessible by steps and ramps.
Most of the new tramway will be segregated, while some of it will integrate
with traffic, in particular at crossing points. An advantage of the tram being
segregated from the highway is that it will not be delayed by other highway
traffic, providing a reliable frequent service. The alignment is subject to
further design development as the scheme progresses.
Proposals will be developed to maximise the efficiency of the tram service,
while maintaining traffic flows in the area, particularly at busy times, for
example during special events and football matches.
Some changes are proposed to the highway as part of the scheme. Sections of
highway proposed for modifications include:
 Closure of Trafford Wharf Road (between Sir Alex Ferguson Way and
Wharf End)
 Closure of Wharf End
 Remodelling of Parkway Circle
 Remodelling of Peel Circle
 Single lane eastbound on Village Way (between Mosley Road and Fifth
Avenue)
