Scottish National Racing Pigeon Club Peterborough Young Bird National Saturday 10th September We were at Peterborough for the final National race of the season the convoy of 442 birds were released at 9.45 am into a south west wind conditions were good up to the North East were the earlier heavy rain cleared by mid day therefore prospects of a good fast race were very high. The birdage was better than expected considering the heavy losses experienced in all areas earlier in the season. National Winner Adam Luke Dunbar 1st and 2nd Open 1st & 2nd Section B. A & E Luke of Dunbar. Adam clocked his winners, a mated pair, at 13.58 to record velocities of 1767 and 1766 respectively they were raced on darkness and sent sitting on overdue eggs. The race winner a light checker cock is bred from his excellent 2007 blue Jeff Van Winkle cock a big winner for Adam with 5 firsts in club and 3 first federations to his name he was paired to a Norman Renton hen the winner now named Lucky Lukey had won 4 positions in club and fed prior to the national. The second open winner is a nice check pied hen very good in the hand she is bred from Peter Virtues’ Jan Aarden lines and previously won 1st club 2nd Fed Wakefield for Adam. Dave’s blue cock had one race from Weatherby at 138 miles and was then stopped due to an outbreak of young bird sickness in the loft he resumed training after it cleared up and had two tosses at 35 miles before going to the national. Both sire and dam are stock pigeons bred by Dave’s good friend Bob Clark of Newcastle from Harwood brothers stock, the dam has now bred pigeons which have won 1st ,2nd , and 3rd National. Section C st rd th 1 & 3 Section 9 & 12th Open Jim Benvie Kirkcaldy Jim’s two winners are nest mates and are double grand children of his great national winner Kingdom Boy. These birds were on the darkness and the section winner was slipped a new youngster on the day of basketing. They had raced the full programme up to Peterborough. Jim Benvie pictured with his 1st and 3rd section C winners. 2nd Section 10th Open James Anderson Cardenden James’s first two are nest mates bred from a hen who was 18th open at last seasons Peterborough national and 56th Open Wanstead Flats this year. She is a Jan Aarden and the sire is a Jocky King Jan Aarden cross. They had every race and flown on the darkness system. James Anderson Cardenden Section D st rd th 1 & 3 Section D 16 & 93rd Open Jim Jack Falkirk. The section D winner was bred by Tommy Mallaburn of Anlwick again another darkness youngster she had every race in the programme before going to Peterborough The 3rd Section winner was bred by Brian Nelson of Ripon and is a Houben and scored in the club twice before the National. Jim is an official of the North West Fed Jim Jack Falkirk 2nd Section D Frank Baillie Clackmannan 2nd section goes to Frank Baillie of Clackmannan Frank is no stranger to the winners rostrum having won the section on several occasions, the Peterborough National was this checker cock’s third race and was trained at 40 miles two or three times before being sent. He is a direct son of Frank’s Andrezele section winner and also carries some Brian Denney blood in his pedigree Frank Baillie Clackmannan Section E st 1 Section E Dr J Salmond Shotts There is some interesting breeding in Jim’s section winner he is a Marriot X Bricoux bred through Robert Armstrong of Renfrew also featured in this ones breeding is Robert McLaughlin, Walter McGaffney and John Farrer of Fleet. Jim is a Bricoux enthusiast and has a great gene pool of this family in his lofts going back to the great Dr Anderson of Armadale, Jim’s winner named “Merlin of Brannock” is a nephew of his good old Red Grizzle cock winner of 5 channel diplomas and he also carries the bloodlines of the Dosser another great channel pigeon 5 times a winner all under 800ypm. Dr James Salmond Shotts 2nd Section E Kerr Stainthorpe Lesmahagow Kerr’s hen was raced to the perch having had 6 races up to Weatherby then 4 short tosses and one longer one from Seton Sands in East Lothian prior to the race, she is very well bred indeed with both parents being from J & I Alston breeding with the dam especially bred for stock she contains the bloodlines of John’s very best national prize winning pigeons The Stirling cock and Townfoot Goodboy III mealy family.The 2nd section hen is medium bodied and slightly long cast with a nice rich eye. John Creechan from the Larkhall South club takes the 3rd section E prize with a checker cock bred in his own loft from his Vandenabeele stock, these pigeons have been performing well for John. This youngster flew the full young bird programme and has previously won 2nd club 3rd fed Weatherby and 3rd club 5th fed Risdale 2. He was slightly injured on his return from the national. John is a dedicated fancier and is helped greatly by his daughter Ann, he was the only member of The Larkhall South club to fly the complete programme. John and Mary Creechan 3rd Section E Section F st nd rd 1 2 3 Section F John Murdoch Greenock Great race for John taking the first 4 in the section his winner is bred from a Louella Jan Aarden X Allan Darragh she flew every race and was very steady. The 2nd section winner is a blue cock bred from John’s Belgian stock and he topped the fed from Risdale the race before the National. 3rd section was won by a grizzle hen the sire being a John Proctor cock paired to a Belgian hen, John rates this pigeon as being the best youngster in the loft she topped the fed twice and was narrowly beaten for a third 1st fed by a loft mate. The fourth section was another from his Allan Darragh stock and flew every race up to the national.
