Do this in your spelling book. Write spelling words on separate lines, skipping lines in between in your spelling book. Next to the word, use cut up letters from the newspaper or a magazine to spell the word. Glue the letters next to the written word. Hat Man Story Words ABC Order Write a story in your spelling book using at least 6 of your spelling words. Underline the spelling words in your story. Draw an illustration to go with your story. Write all your spelling words in alphabetical order in your spelling book. Skip a line in between each word. Highlight the first letter in a color. Use alphabet pasta, cereal, magnetic letters, letter beads or playdoh to spell your spelling words. If you choose this activity, please have your parent(s) write “macaroni spelling” and their initials in your spelling journal to show that you did this at home. Rainbow Words Sentences Write your spelling words in your spelling book with different colors. Use colored pencils, markers, or Write at least 8 spelling words in sentences in your spelling book. Underline each spelling word. You can draw an illustration that goes with each sentence. Cheer It Spell out each spelling word in a cheer. For example, “Give me a B, Give me an A, Give me a T. Your child can choose a different writing activity each night. Plus Monday through Friday: Oral/Verbal or “out loud” practice: Each night, you and your child MUST practice the spelling words; out loud at least 3x using the finger spell and blend method or tap and sweep for red words. Your child should know how to do this; we do it in class every day. Example: Say the word, using your fingers, one at a time, to take the word out a finger/letter a time, Next, using your fingers, sound the word out a finger/letter at a time. BLEND it together and then Say the word again This will help reinforce the spelling, letter recognition and the sound, which helps with decoding during reading. The spelling words will be basic letters or words that will help your child to practice letter sounds and transfer the skill to make words. This list is specifically created for your child to practice letter recognition; letter sounds and improve decoding skills! The nightly homework activity schedule is pasted in your child’s spelling journal. Plus, your child must practice the words OUT LOUD each night! Monday through Friday: Oral/Verbal or “out loud” practice Each night, you and your child should practice the spelling words; out loud at least 3x using the finger spell and blend.
