Sven-Goran Eriksson has suggested that "In the end, it's that psychological difference that decides whether you win or lose," In professional football many teams employ the services of a Sports Psychologist. These individuals offer expert guidance to managers and players in relation to maximising their performance and also the team’s performance. Football managers are leaving “no stone unturned” to gain that extra edge to help them achieve success. As a result, the application of psychology in football is becoming increasingly prevalent. Scenario – The first team squad at your club are having a mixed season, with a lot of unpredictable performances. The manager is not happy with how his team are performing and has asked for guidance from the clubs sport psychologist. The psychologist feels that it would be a useful experience to involve you as you are studying Sports Psychology. He has asked you to produce a report which focuses on a number of psychological factors that could be affecting the performance of the first team squad. When completed, the report will be used within a squad meeting to highlight factors which may be affecting performance. Unit 17 – Psychology for Sports Performance To: Scholar@footballclub.co.uk From: sportspsychologist@footballclub.co.uk Subject: Team meeting: Sports Psychology Following on from our conversation, your report needs to focus on how psychological factors can affect a player’s performance. You need to produce a summary of how personality and motivation can affect a player’s performance. To develop the squads’ understanding further, you should include examples of sport individuals, whose performance has been affected by their personality or motivation. Included in your report should be a summary of the causes and symptoms of aggressive behaviour. Please ensure you include sporting examples of where aggression has had either a positive or negative effect upon performance. The manager has called the meeting for next week, before the derby at the weekend, so I need this completing ASAP. Assessment Support Assessment and Grading Criteria Descriptions When you see describe you should try and paint a picture in words to the reader. It is useful to always think that the reader of your script knows nothing and therefore you have to teach the reader the knowledge that you have through your assignment. When you are asked to explain you should describe the point and then give details and reason of why. For example, if you are describing sporting injuries to explain the injury you would provide an example from the world of sport of an athlete who has had the injury and explain the causes of this injury to the player, you may also explain the treatment to the player. When you are asked to analyse you must gather as much evidence as possible and make a judgment from your own ideas. For example if you think Steven Gerrard is the best footballer in the world then you must provide evidence to back this up. You may therefore use statistical data to show his goal scoring and assists averages. You may also use data Unit 17from – Psychology for Sports Performance devised top media pundits regarding Steven Gerrard’s performances and by using this information you will then form an argument to justify your own opinion.
